Well folks, in what seems like decades since our last rain it the area, we finally got drenched on Friday. This made for perfect hunting conditions for Ridley and I on Saturday MDing an early 1900's home in the downtown area.
The weather was in the 70's, nice breeze, shaded area under large oaks, and soft brown soil to dig. Ahhhhh. Ridley brought his kids for awhile because wifey was at work. They hung out with me most of the time, but whenever I heard, "I have to go to the bathroom", I quickly sent them to Papa Ridley. In which I heard him reply, "just pee in the bushes". :o
They were really angels though. ;) Papa Ridley went home a wee bit upset about noon to take the kids home, but returned a while later.
Anyways,
I think my Dad may have been looking down on me, as it turned out to be a pretty good day for me. Within 5 minutes I had already dug a CW cleaner bullet (correct term?). This was my first of that type.
We hunted this yard for about 4 hours, and then the next door neighbor offered to let us detect a few of their properties. Since I was short on time, and Dave was low on batteries, we hit a 1930's house about two blocks away. Again, I was blessed right away with a 1918 Merc! We had to race through this spot, but both of us came up with some neat finds.
Here's my take for the day:
*1918 and 1943 Mercs.

*1945 War nickel (crusty & soaking in oil right now).
*1904 IH.

*Wheats- 1917 , 1919 , 1929 , 1937 , 1944 , 1952.

*CW Cleaner bullet. Any info on this one?

*Two other bullets. Any ID on these?

*A pin with Latin writing. FRONT says: "Gloria Ad Caput Venire" BACK says: "Denmark's NY. 6?" (possibly 69?).
Any idea what this translates to?

*Sterling silver pendant with "Protect us St. Christopher" on one side, and "St. Raphael Protect Us" on the other. Stamped "Sterling".

*"Skovill Mfg. Co. Waterbury" button back with shank.

*A clip of some sort that has what looks to be a fire breathing dragon stamped into it. It looks to be very old.
Any idea what this interesting piece is?

*Toy gun handle with "Cowpoke" on it.

*Asst'd relics including a dog tag with "W.M. Ross Cary, NC" on the front and "Disabled American Veterans" on back.

*A zipper-pull for MasterEagle. ;D

The Mighty Tesoro pulled through again.
Thanks for looking,
MM

Terrific Finds! I've heard a lot of good reports on the 'Silver' from Tesoro.Glad you finally got some decent digging conditions. You certainly made a good haul.

"It prides to Caput come."

That's the best translation I can give you, MM.

Latin I'm sure.

Congrats on gettin' out and on finding those goodies.

I wonder if your dragon is actually a griffin? Either way, it's pretty cool lookin'

from Wikipedia:
The griffin, griffon or gryphon[1] (from Old French grifon[2]) is a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. As the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle the king of the birds, the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature.[3] In antiquity it was a symbol of divine power and a guardian of the divine.[4]

Thank you two. A Griffon sounds like exactly what it is. Very strange looking creature for sure. I knew it couldn't be Puff the Magic Dragon. ;D

Thanks Dan. For some reason I thought of the title for my post even before I got out to dig yesterday. It was an omen, I guess.
I got to go track down Ridley now. I think he is out raiding the MD spots without me today.
On the other hand, maybe I should give him a few hour headstart since he is hunting without a Tesoro. ;D :o
Congrats again "Mr. 500"!

awesome day out for sure !!! gonna be a while before you can stop smiling..... ;D ;D ;D ;D

You did great yesterday, Doug!
Every time I turned around you had another keeper. That cleaner bullet is the bomb! That one should go in the portable display case next to a regular 3 ringer.
You're a natural born treasure hunter!

I'm stopping by the Cliftons later today to drop off some marbles and the Lone Ranger pin. Don't worry. I won't touch their yard. :D

Congratulations on all your great finds!

Ridley

That is a great looking dropped cleaner bullet. Do you think these bullets that you find in the yards in your area are of war time deposition, or were they lost later by kids whom had them as souvenirs of the conflict?

Plehbah,
I know this area had a lot war action and soldiers, but EVERY bullet I have found so far has been a dropped, rather than fired. I've found bullets now at about five different locations, including farms and downtown homes since I've been MDing. The downtown homes are from the early 1900's. At farm that I hunt, I've found items back into the early 1800's. I just wish I would find a fired bullet sometime. :'( This cleaner bullet is by far my favorite so far though.
Thanks,
MM

Thanks. I'll try to work on that display case this week. Don't wait for me to hunt their yard. Feel free. You are the one that got our foot in the door on all of these downtown spots.
I spotted another place last night. There is construction all around, but they haven't leveled the old house (early 1900's) yet.
Too bad we didn't have more time to finish that 2nd house Saturday. I felt like I was in a race. :D
