Some of you may recall my earlier post where I thought the 'epaulet' was a cool military item. You were kind enough to set me straight. It was a brass powder flask.

Well, that item was found in about 7" of dirt. Incredibly, today I found it's other half. It was a good 50+ feet from the first half and just under the surface. One portion was sticking out of the ground. Sadly, it is far worse for wear. I never would have ever guessed I would have found the other half, yet here there it was. If you look closely you can see one of the stags which correlates to the right hand stag on the first found half.

Here's the link to the first part: http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,351344.0/topicseen.html. Below are pics of the found part. Don't have the in situ pics so these will have to do. I'll get clearer pics but using my phone for now. Enjoy!

Lucky find for me, unfortunately the ol' xTerra crapped out on me through the rest of the hunt so I am going to have to use the old stand-by Garrett coinmaster for now.

yeap pretty rare to get bits that go together, nice job :icon_thumright:

Thanks Crusader. I think you're right. Never really hear about those one off part finds ever really getting the rest (well, with a few exceptions). Would like to be able to straighten this piece out but you know what will happen! Well, once the Minelab is back in business I'll be able to go through the rest of that area and possible find some other interesting tidbits. ;D

I've had just a handful of examples, the more memorable are a medieval spur rowel put back together after an old break but it was years apart from finding the first bit. Plus Shaun7's first Gold Coin was actually 1 half of a coin I had found 4-6 years previously on a field that many had done for many year :headbang:

if straighten, just remember to not bend on the bend itself but either side of it, you may end up with a bit of a ripple, but you stand a better chance of it not snaping. however this type of piece will go wrong more times than right, if you think its worth it, send the money :-\

I've yet to get even a small piece of one of these, maybe one day

Those matches, especially the gold coin, must have been real revelations. Did you and Shaun ever decide how you were going to share the whole coin, every other day or odd numbered days only? LOL
I don't think I will make any attempt to straighten the one piece. As I'm sure you've seen, brass like that is pretty brittle. I know the moment I tried to straighten it, it would split. I don't have enough of a handle on the properties of brass to think a slow heating process would help. I can enjoy it the way it is. The coolest part about the whole thing is I found both halves!

yeap, you have to do whats confortable, and who knows in the future it may get a passing opportunity to get done.

On the coin subject, I like it apart, its a better story & I have pictures of it together.

I believe you're right about that (re: the coin). The best part of the story, besides the finding of both halves, is one of your friends found it and not someone who you'd never see again. When you're sitting in rockers gumming toast and milk you can revisit the story!
