As any of you know that follow my ramblings, I read a lot of mags. to get the latest info on what is going on around me. I have found, what will probably be the "Next Great Ripoff" and it isn't even illegal. Figrenzo Omenetto, Professor at Tufts, Has come up with a circuit board that desolvers over a set period of time. Here are the claimed usages.
Weeks- Medical inplants
Months-Environmental
Years- Consumer electronics like cell phones.
Now I know that some electronic equipment, like sat. receivers have a kill circuit built in that allows the service provider to destroy your receiver by merely keying in a code, but can you imagine, you buy a cell phone which carries a year guarantee and it has a circuit board set to go at 18 months. Hay, they have ink cartridges for copiers that die automaticly after a certian period of time, even if you never use it.************** Frank

Frankn,

Maybe the next generation of detectors will just self destruct the circuit board after the warranty runs out....lol.

great-Id buy as much used as possible--- used market would be hot.

Buy as many used classics as possible.

This is the price we pay for living in a disposable economy...

Manufacturers have been using, "Dated Plastics" for a long time, plastics with an expiration date. Ever notice on Autos, for instance, the plastic begins to crack after about 5 years? Even if you keep it out of the sun it will continue to "cure" until it crumbles to particles. Don't plan on keeping any plastic junk for long!
Self destruct circuits in electronic devices have also been around since the late 70s. They are sensitive to hours of use usually. Remove batteries when not in use and unplug appliances your not using to prolong their life. Still, it's a shame a society has to rely on disposable goods to survive!

For a long time I've thought there should be self-destruct abilities in land mines. After a set time the mines would fail safe. Most military operations only use/need the mines operable for a short time, usually to allow their escape or to obstruct an area.
I once heard of a company working on an idea for this but not for years.
Maybe an acid vile could break when setting the mine. The acid would over time destroy the detonating device.

We were all born with a built in self-destruct device called our biological clock. I've read that people working in this field can see the time where our clock can be reset to live longer. They are not comfortable when considering the outcome of people living to the biblical 120 years.

Oh MAN! Don't let the Gov. hear about that one! You won't be able to retire till your 100!

Interesting subject...

This thread really caught my eye because I spent much of my life working in electronics in general, Programmable Logic Controllers in particular.
I remember one of the first exercises in College, Programing PLCs, was to build a clock. The clock then would be set to create an "event" that would occur
at a preset date and time. The thought of making the system shut itself down "dawned on me" clear back then, as it did others I'm certain.
Anyway to make a long story short, the 80s came along and I purchased a high-end VCR, the early ones were a real challenge to program!, The thing
went "belly-up" right after the Warranty expired. I dismantled the thing to see if I could reset the timer, no avail! Took it to a "Tech" who, for a priceshowed
me what terminal to jumper. PRESTO! I was good for another year! Yeah! I was thinking, If people only KNEW how bad it really is, they would be outraged!
I know I was then, and STILL are NOW, very disappointed with the unscrupulous practices in the electronic industry.

Stay tuned for my upcoming "rant" about extended warranty. That's another huge ripoff!

Yes, a time based circuit is used in some ink cartridges, But the kill circuit in the sat receivers is embedded code triggered by a transmitted code. If they believe there are "Fixed" receivers at a location, they will destroy them with a transmitted kill signal. I had two receivers die at the same time. A tec came out and try to tell me I had the wrong feed in cable and that caused the problem. I told him that it was a high grade RG6 which was the right cable. He replaced both receivers at no cost. I installed sat systems for about 2 years. I know what happened. FrankHAVRE DE GRACE 013-3.jpg

I herd on the Jay Leno show there making condoms that dissolve in water.

All of my rechargable batteries expire in 6 months.
