The new 2017 Lady Liberty. Say what?

The sad part of this whole nonsense... the people that the Mint are trying to placate, the majority can't afford to purchase this item for a collection. They'll never hold one.

Reading the quote from the mint sems like this is really just a "guilt" issue.

Disgusting.

This reminds of the feeling I get when I see black or African-American Santa Clauses (sp?). The name Santa Claus came from the Dutch, but St. Nicholas was a Turk. Probably darker skinned, but not African-American. The same thing with Barbie dolls. (My wife is a collector.) Why do they have to make an African-American or Hispanic "Barbie"? Why not a new doll with a new name? After all, Barbie is named after the creator's daughter who is white.

In fact, wouldn't Africans or African-Americans celebrating Christmas be "cultural appropriation"? </sarcasm>

What you talkin' bout Willis?

BTW- She looks like a crackhead. That is the ugliest American coin I have ever seen in my life. Not because she's gold either!

So just because she is black or has cornrows in her hair, she is a crackhead? Disgusted by the comment and disappointed in those who liked it.

She black? I had not noticed.

Did you know that according to census 2010, about 13% of U.S. citizens are black. Did you know that according to Federal records, in 2010 about 30% of S.N.A.P. recipients are black? So much for blacks encompassing Freedom and Liberty.

And why the change in the first place? I thought colour is negligible and makes no difference. Apparently to the US Mint it makes all the difference. I'm more ashamed of Our race oriented Federal Mint than I am of any individual predjudice on anyone's part.

everyone has a right to their public opinion on the coin.

You said that I didn't. Think about that real hard. Actually she looks like a crackhead because everything but her face looks emaciated. Doesn't look like she's had a good meal in weeks, look at that chicken neck. Maybe she's just anorexic. :icon_scratch: Just doesn't look like a true portrayal of what "Lady Liberty" represents. That has nothing to so with the fact that she is black, it has to do with the overall look of her, period.
She actually looks like an old time slave from the 1800's. Nice portrayal of the new "Lady Liberty," right? Black, white, brown, yellow, or red, put someone on a coin that has some type of real U.S. historical significance.

While I'm at it... You do know who Lady Liberty is don't you? I don't know how a statue (one of the most famous in the world) that represents the freedom of literally millions and millions of people who came to this country through Ellis Island can be conceived as a "tired, racist beauty standard."

Yes but i agree with diggummup..He is right on there.

If that quote was truly from a mint spokesperson then it's too late. Nothing will stop it. And it's true that the people they are trying to placate for the most part will never see one.

As I see it, yes.

I see it as making a Joke.

But then

I try to keep a sense of Humor :coffee2:

Why put a face on any coin, there are many beautiful coins that never had a bust on them. As soon as you put someones face on a coin it offends someone else. I have had the honer of finding a very rare pillar dollar and it is still my favorite design as soon as they switched the pillars and globes to a bust I felt the coin started to decline in popularity. After all for every great king or ruler or even a gods depiction there was someone who opposed them. So why not leave busts, portraits, and faces off coins. Stick to symbols and signs to represent money. photo.JPG

I see no Problem with a Bust.

Closest was the 1916/17 Standing liberty Quarters.

Then they covered the Bust :(
