The most unusual coin spill EVER!. . . and it's not over yet. . .

Earlier this week, I spent three hours hunting a local site that's been
producing an interesting variety of finds. This site is over 125-years old
and every now and then, will surprise me with an unexpected relic or two.

The most interesting relic so far is the Sterling hollowware handle to
either a ladies' hairbrush or hand mirror. The only info I've been able to
find on this is that it was made by Reed & Barton but, no luck in matching
a pattern or date. . . I welcome any of you're thoughts.

Day Two:
Was out early this morning and went to a forested part of this site and found an interesting
button encircled with glass beads and less than 20-feet away, a 1902 Indian. . . my first :)

After thoroughly having my hopes rejuvenated by these last two finds, there was a bounce
in my step as I made my way to the next forested area. . . and possibly some old silver!

Little did I know that at the edge of this forest, I was on my way to recovering my most
unusual coin spill EVER :o. . . When I first began searching, my XLT was going
ape$hit with penny signals. . . no matter which direction I went. . . penny signals!
I did a quick perimeter search to find out how large this area was and it was AT LEAST
6 x 8 feet in size (remember, I haven't started digging yet :o)

OK, after all these penny signals I thought someone might have dumped some
scrap metal so stick my knife in the dirt to find out and out pops two ORANGE pennies!
I dig 3" to my right and out pop 3 more. . . and so on. . . and so on. . .

THEN, :stop: :stop: :stop: Thunder, Lightning, Rain. . . I quick cover my holes,
spread some leaves and hide any footprints. . . and leave. . . >:(

To be continued. . .

Somebody had a club Seeded Coin Hunt. Those painted pennies are tokens for prizes. The Person who found the most, WON. Great Finds. HH...Jesse.

seeded area for a club hunt -- other missed seeded items might be in the area also * worth a check who knows?

I have hundreds of Lincoln cents that I have found with my detector over the years that I threw in a tumbler with some sand to clean the corrosion off. I gave them to my young kids. I am sure if you searched my yard you would find several Lincoln cent coin spills if you know what I mean. I find pennies laying around the yard every now and then from the kids and the coins I gave them. I guess some future treasure hunter that moves in my house will find alot of pennies! :o

I agree. I found a green painted nickel at a seeded site. Can't wait for an update!

Thanks for all your comments and thoughts. . . I'll have to ask around to see
if these pennies are in fact related to some kind of hunt. . . I never thought of that.

It's now a day later and I still haven't gone back to see how many are left. . . It'll have
to be either Tuesday or Wednesday as we're expecting a snow & rain mix for the
next few days :P. As far as I can tell, the oldest penny is from the 1960's (all Memorials >:()

When I do get back there I'll post what I find. . . and hope for some Wheats.

Thanks all,

they are marked (painted orange in this case) to know which are planted cents for the hunt and which are just "found " cents---- the most found gets a prize -- a penny hunt its called --normally for the kids but adults do em too as part of a club hunt often

haha thats very odd that modern day pennies will pop up at your very old hunting ground. Congratulations on the small coin spill!

Does this explain the red painted quarters I've found? I got one in change and one which was dug a week ago.

yep often painted coins is just that -- "finder money" from a seeded hunt if its red/ orange / blue or whatever color they used --its turned back in and is counted -- unpainted coins are non planted ones thus their yours to keep and do not "count" for the contest-- Ivan
