Hello all, just another fun couple of days digging in the pits. Started out on the first day in a privy that really ended up being a two seater or maybe even a two seater with a lavatory and ash pit. Needless to say it was BIG :o So we went down about 8 feet and found the Owl pitcher. Too bad it has a crack almost all the way around. But its still in one piece. Found several other high dollar pitchers that were shattered too. >:(

Continued on to the use layer and pulled out theis beautiful Haines's Patent March 1st 1870 fruit jar. No cracks or chips ;D
I think that was the find of the day for that pit. So we were tired and decided to hit the next pit on the next day. This pit was about 20 feet away from the other and it started out a bit scary :(... Started to dig and about 18 inches down found a broken blob top beer and a gas line right next to it. :o Although I know the lot that we are digging in has been vacant for some time and there are no homes on the lot, its still kinda scary to see one while you are digging. But now that we located it we were safe to go around it and continue the dig. This was a great privy with a very shallow ash layer and then the glass layers. We started to pull out blob beers, hutches, medicines, gins and a mess of other bottles. It went down around the ten foot level and ended >:( I wanted that baby to go forever...So as we were collapsing the walls in search of any late throw hangers in the layers I punched through to another pit behind the wooden wall. The ash was heavy and the cans and bottles were all over the place. Pulled out some quart milks, medicines and the cool looking Waldorf-Astoria Dry Gin. It appears to be a tooled top, blown with no seems. I figure it dates to early 1900. Not too much in the way of searching for info on this one. Maybe you guys can help me out here :)...So since we were kinda tunneling we decided to fill her up and come back to get the rest later. But as we were geting ready to leave we decided to probe for some other pits in that same line of pits. Glad we did, becasue we found 4 more and I am sure they are loaded with glass :icon_thumleft: So enjoy the pics and there will be more to come....Goodluck and be very safe out there digging( Wish for no gas lines)...Yikes....... jgas

Great dig! Lots of treasure there. I enjoyed seeing your probe with the bike handles. Did you make that? Do you use a slightly larger ball on the end of your probe? The reason I ask is I built mine and it is surprising useful tool.
Thanks for sharing your finds. Good post!

Those are some Great glass finds! Keep those photos rolling and I'll keep anxiously reading! I'm hoping there's an earlier pit there among those others you found. The owl pitcher is neat, even though it may be a bit later. The canning jar is a great find.

Is that stoneware jug marked?

Best Wishes,

Buckles

Thanks for all the great replies everyone. It sure was a great day in the dirt :laughing9: As far as the Owl goes it was amazing that it survived intact as much as it did. I will surely get it cleaned and repost it. The jug was not marked either and the top was broken off >:(

The probes I use are all different lengths and widths. That one is easy to use because its only a 4 footer and the grips are easy on the hands.

I am sure that there are some more great pits in that same yard. Just gotta hit em all when I have the time. There are at least 8 more in the same yard that I have located. One of which is loaded with glass. On every poke I hit glass and hopefully full bottles.
Maybe a Bryant's Bitters awaits :tongue3: Thanks again for all the replies....goodluck out there. jgas
