The "Holy Grail" of Indian Head Pennies ....

Thought you would like to see one of the coins we ALL hope to dig up in our lifetimes !!? ?:o

............ Not found me today, but yesterday.

............ Obviously a detector find, just not by MY detector.? :'(

Purchased this yesterday for $229 !!? ?;D
Can't wait to see how a little "Surgery" will improve this coin as there is, IMO, no way I can NOT turn a profit on this little treasure.

Guess I should state the obvious ....
if it were ME that had dug this up, there is not a chance in H*** that I would be selling it !! ;)

Re: The "Holy Grail" of Indian Head Pennies ....

He's a beauty. I have found hundreds of Indians and I'm still looking for that one. It will turn up one day. Were I'm at in P.a there are alot of indians to find around here. I could clean that up and get 500.00 for it.

Nice buy Jer

You must be reading my mind ......? :D

The coin has "Fine details" including all letters in "Liberty". The real shame is the bad corrosion problem !! Greysheet ( Buy/wholesale ) is at $1000.00 for Fine & $510.00 in Good. I feel that the corrosion problem can not be fixed but, after getting rid of the debris ( and a treatment of Blue Ribbon ), it should easily bring $400-500 at auction on ePay.? ?;) I will supply before & after scans after it arrives in the mail.

Re: The "Holy Grail" of Indian Head Pennies ....

I am not too familar with indian Heads, but what makes that particular one valuable? I cant make out the date on it. Someone please educate me. ???

Never mind you got burned

Year is 1877, by FAR the most valuble date in the Set.

Yeah ... I got "burned". ::)

Have been buying & selling coins for YEARS. Wish I would get "Burned" like this every week. ::)

Re: The "Holy Grail" of Indian Head Pennies ....

Current retail in G ( good ) is $700, F ( Fine ) $1400.00

Like I said earlier, the coin has many details a "Fine" would have, but because of the corrosion problem, over-all this one will only grade out as G at best IMO ( after I am done with it ;) )

Just about ANY Collector would be happy to even hold one in their hands, let alone own one.

Imagine DIGGING one up !!? I would be happier than a kitten following a leaky cow !! ;D

Re: The "Holy Grail" of Indian Head Pennies ....

Sorry I have a couple with bad pictures like that one lol!!!!!!!!!! Just wanted a lil more info...
Maybe I better rethink what I have sitting in coffee cups on my desk.
Even in that shape it's worth something..go figure
Dano.

I would say no, unless you know what you are doing.

You can find a few tips elsewhere on TreasureNet. ;)

Re: The "Holy Grail" of Indian Head Pennies ....

Is a 1903 Indian Head worth anything? Got one in a box upstairs with the silver dollars.

Re: The "Holy Grail" of Indian Head Pennies ....

Throw it in olive oil and leave it for a long time. Don't use an abrasive or brush.

Re: The "Holy Grail" of Indian Head Pennies ....

DRex, Get yourself a recent copy of the Yeoman's redbook. It will tell you where to look for mintmarks and the full retail value of your coins. Most Indian cents with readable dates are worth at least a dollar. The 1877 is the most valuable standard production Indian cent closely followed by the 1908-S and the 1909-S. The other valuable indians are varieties, overdates, etc. You could also go to Barnes and Noble and have a cup of coffee and look at their shelf copy for free. exanimo, ss

I'll save you the Cost of a Book ;D

$1.50 to $8.00 Depending on Condition, GOOD to Extremly Fine

Re: The "Holy Grail" of Indian Head Pennies ....

I'm doubting very much if good + cleaned will add significantly to the value of good + naturally corroded.
Any 'improvements' made should be very obvious, and in all probabilty will detract from its value.

Re: The "Holy Grail" of Indian Head Pennies ....

1877 Indian. Best condition (PF-63), worth 3,600
