The "Hidden Penny" Dilema!

Heres a pic of the indians that I found the other day. There was originally 4 stuck together but one of them fell off. I cleaned up the two outer coins the best i could and noticed the date of the center coin peeking out from between the other two. My question is What is the date of the center coin if the last digit is a "0" and the third # appears to be a "1" or "7"? Do you think its a rare 1870? All of the coins that I found in this spot are 1880's and 1890's. What do you think? :icon_scratch: 8)

Re: The "Hidden Penny" Dilema!

I am very interested in seeing the result. I'd think it has to be 1870. Please post pics when you get them seperated. Could be in nice condition too! Good Luck!

As I've previously posted, the third numeral can't be a "1."

It can't be a "4," either.

So if it's not "1870," what other plausible date is there with a straight-legged numeral before the "0"?
I figured it was an 1870 before i ever posted this. I just wanted everyone else to be involved.

Well, okay... but better go ahead and send it to me for "ongoing analysis," just to be sure! :D

Excellent,,,,, but I'm a newbie so I'm wondering why 1870 is so important? Thanks

Re: The "Hidden Penny" Dilema!

try the freezer thing someone posted, i used that method to get crust of roman coins. a quick way is to get a red can of duster from radioshack. turn the can upside down and a freezing liquid nitrogen will come out, pull the trigger slowly so it drips out, then drop in boiling water. quicker than putting in freezer over and over

red duster? Is that the brand name? what is it normally used for? liquid nitrogen?

Canned compressed Air, used for cleaning keyboards and other things... If you hold the can upside down, it comes out as a liquid instead of a gas.

Although I don't recommend it, it also makes a great pratical joke around the office....... :icon_jokercolor:

Ah ok. Its not liquid nitrogen. :o Some type of ozone safe refrigerant gas that turns to liquid when compressed. R-12 was the popular choice of the past until it was outlawed.

I'm still debating on seperating these. I like showing them off the way they are for now. 8)

ya its compressed air,not sure of the name, but the only red can of air RS sells. we used to feeze things.. and burn each other with it. lol, good times;) ya u can dip "flowers in it and throw them, they shatter. i VOTE seperation, if my vote counts........... i mean, if you do not like the outcome, glue them back....... i dunno, great find either way!!!!

You can buy a good example of this coin for reasonable money but you can never fully explain to anyone interested, how it looked when found nor could anyone interested really appreciate how it once looked once separated.

The coin itself most likely has damage from being sandwiched and may not be worth anything more than a
"filler" in somebodies collection.

It`s a fantastic item as it is.

You have a bunch of pictures that show it as it is.
Go ahead and carefully separate them.
Show folks what was actually hiding in there.

Actually ... it's entirely up to you.

Re: The "Hidden Penny" Dilema!

a Fingernail Between with a slight Twist will pop
them apart. There Most likely will be no green on them
and detail should be great.

odds are they wern't pressed together just laying there all these years.

Re: The "Hidden Penny" Dilema!

Lol...I wouldnt have too much of a problem seperating them if i wanted too. Its not the fact that I dont know if I can........I dont know if I want to!!
As for both of the outside coins, both are facing out soo thats not a mystery. The only mystery is how good of shape is the 1870 in. Most of these indians had a pretty bad thick green buildup. 8)
