The "Hidden Penny" Dilema!

Heres a pic of the indians that I found the other day. There was originally 4 stuck together but one of them fell off. I cleaned up the two outer coins the best i could and noticed the date of the center coin peeking out from between the other two. My question is What is the date of the center coin if the last digit is a "0" and the third # appears to be a "1" or "7"? Do you think its a rare 1870? All of the coins that I found in this spot are 1880's and 1890's. What do you think? :icon_scratch: 8)

Re: The "Hidden Penny" Dilema!

The third numeral can't be a 1.

Indian Heads weren't around in 1810, and had been discontinued before 1910.

Re: The "Hidden Penny" Dilema!

by the slant of the numeral, I'd say it's 1870

If it's a vote, I'd say 1870 as well.

You might me able to put them in the deep freezer then drop them in boiling water. The drastic temp change may cause them to seperate

1870 most likely. Definitely get them apart. Who knows what the last one could be, 1877 possibly.

Just an observation....the "0" in the date looks closer to the "ica" than the one on top coin.

Re: The "Hidden Penny" Dilema!

My guess is the big 70! The edge also looks more worn than the 1890 as it would if it was in cirulation for 20 years.
Way To Go!

Re: The "Hidden Penny" Dilema!

As I've previously posted, the third numeral can't be a "1."

It can't be a "4," either.

So if it's not "1870," what other plausible date is there with a straight-legged numeral before the "0"?

Re: The "Hidden Penny" Dilema!

Agree 100% with PBK .. Only separation will uncover the mystery... Probably the last two digits are 70...for your sake, I wish you luck. Let us know.
