Does the ring thingy push back through the top lid part? What is on the other end of that? It kind of looks like an old canteen stopper...

Lid for a nut chopper. My mom had one....Lid goes on jar and the pushrod had an "X" shaped blade. Push rod up and down like a butter churn and chops nuts.....

what it looks like to me.

I don't think it's a chopper top--the handle would hurt your hands. It could be a candle snuffer or a heat blocker that hangs above a kerosene lamp.

My family has been doing restoration work on stained glass for over 75 years. This is a vase cap with extended eye loop for a hanging ceiling lamp. I have replaced thousands of them....good hunting..ghosthunter
