We knew after Cru'Dads epic gold coin find we would need to settle back into normality, & we got exactly what we expected.
We changed fields to the neighbouring one, its closer to the Village. Plus we had gridded 20 of the 28 acre field already. We met the owner today told him about the Gold Coin & its now ours.8-) Actually that's how I know its a 28 acre field, he told us after I had guessed 30, so pretty close. Therefore, I'm happy we have covered the best 20 acres, the rest we can try another year if we get desperate.
This new field is only about 10 acres, & should only take us another 2 days to finish, by which time we hope to have 1 Hammered. Very poor land, but like the Goldie proved, you got to cover it.:thumbsup:

I'm basically 95 Ses & 0 disc (old talk), 12Khz.

In your situation I dig all shotgun shells & lead, & everything over 10. (Even if its a beep a swing) Some deeper 00's or --.
I never kneel, I dig, & grab the item in my hands first grab (most times). I even have rings on both hands, so no passing over the coil. I just know most times what it is & how deep & where it is in the pile. Instinct or second nature.
Although I know all the sounds & have never bothered with VDIs in pass detectors, I do now just glance a the ID & use it to better guess.(love calling out what it is before i've dug) But I NEVER dig numbers.

We hunt very similarly it seems. Settings, style, ....I guess I just need to put some fire in my butt.

Thank you. Good hunting!

Sorry, but wrong, no slow about me. 1 Brit said he thought there was 2 of me on the field. Every time he looked up, I was at the other end of the field. Everytime I saw him, he was on his knees.:thumbsup:

I totally agree Cru. I know quite a few hunters that use the wrong digging tool that takes much longer to dig a hole. Then they play around with the pinpointer trying to locate the target. Then once they have it in their hand they carefully examine it, clean it, and eventually deposit it in their pouch. In the meantime I've dug 10 keepers. The only exception is having to slow way down in heavy iron patches which is a must.

We all know by now, one technique doesn't fit all fields. The current land has relatively few targets & spread out nails (Plus lots of cans & canslaw) & is NOT a Site/Settlement. We can cover it quickly & will probably never bother covering it again, or only cover a hotspot, if we get it.
On good Sites we have hammered for years, we slow down a bit & I dig more nails.

Like Bill stated (in a roundabout way), the trick is;
Field hunting (not grass);
Full size Spade - use my Grandad's 1940s - acts as a good stabiliser/walking stick
Digging just the right amount of soil in the first place or only 3 inches at a time - this helps judge depth verses sound (ie. never dig TOO MUCH soil)
Never get on your Knees
Never use a pin-pointer - It's NOT quicker
Spread the soil with your foot, then go for your first grab
Make sure you get it on the first grab
GPS & map your good finds - helps with future years
Practice, practice, practice all of the above, increases your speed & therefore the area you cover.
