Hi T-Netters :icon_thumright:

This is what I consider the find of my life.

In the spring of 2008, I discovered a trading station (village) of the Vikings.
The place dates in the period of about 800 - 940 AD.
Especially sensational is the find of 9 coins of the Carolingian Empire, that do not look as if they have been used as trading silver, but as coins. That could indicate whole new knowledge about the early use of coins in Denmark.
The arab Dirhem coins were used as trading silver, together with large amounts of cut silver rings and other silver items.
In the picture you can also see some of my finds of typical viking fibulae.
The find has been kept secret till now, because the place is situated on a very open place.
The next two weeks the archaeologists will make an excavation of the field.
After the first finds I called in my detector collegue, and we have together found about 300 metal objects on the site.
In one week I will paricipate for one week in the excavation on the site.

Here an assembly of some of my best finds from this viking trading village.

Enjoy !

Regards, The Dane

Only in my dreams could I imagine finding stuff like that. Incredible!
I really enjoyed this thread. Thank you!
Keep us updated please.

Thank you very much guys ! :icon_thumleft:

During the last week I have participated in the excavation of the site, as a detectorspecialist together with my detector friend.
The conclutions of the archaelogists, till now, is that this is a Viking marked, on one of the most important trading sea roads of that time. Trading people as far as from Byzanz (todays Istanbul) traveled on the russian rivers to Novgorod in todays Russia to the Baltic Sea and they and the Viking trading people sailed the Baltic Sea to Haithabu (Hedeby), todays north Germany near the Danish boarder, to make international trade. This place that we found was kind of a pit stop on the way. A marked on the road, also very well protected in case of bad weather.

If you want to see a live video from the excavation ground you can see it here. It´s all in Danish, and only few of you will understand, but you can see how it looks here.

:hello:

Flott video av utgravningen, alltid innteresant når amatørarkeologer og lokale museum samarbeider uten problemer. Dere finner helt sikkert mer spennende gjenstander på dette området i tiden fremover. :)

Takk, Trond ! ;D :icon_thumleft:

AWESOME :icon_king:

It takes a lot to impress the Brits with the finds they keep posting here on Tnet :D

Just because you hunt a place with great potential doesn't mean you actually find it. Must have been a thrill once you realized you found a hot spot in that field.

Thanks for posting the link :icon_thumright: It will keep you busy for years to come.

Saa fundet paa Aeroe

Simply amazing - what an incredible historical find! The site you are detecting is a dream come true for a detectorist. Congratulations!!!!

Jim

All I can say is that this truly touches history. I can only guess that when you hold something that old that in you mines eye it takes you back to that time. Congrats on a job well done.

If Cru gets to visit you, i'll have to come too because he can't drive! Plus he needs someone to make him look good :D

:laughing7: :laughing7: :laughing7:

Sorry lads, I´ve been told they got people enough on that excavation ! ;D

I bet they have, most would do it free of charge

Umm.....I'd pay!

I can't imagine they'd fear the "Cartwheel Kid" too much. Give it a try. ;D

It must have been a blast going there to dig day after day! ...and sad to not be able to go again if that's the case after the week ends.

Here we go again ::)

When I get that first Cartwheel next year, I am going to mail it straight to you......with instructions :D

Thank you all for the nice words !

Latest update (as promised):
The excavation results show that it is probably an international beach market that has been on the location.
No signs of permanent buildings. But my theory is that there might have been some further away from the beach. Future excavations will show if or if not, I hope.
Plans of the museum are to make further investigations in 2010 or 2011.
The autumn (since the excavation) and winter have brought new finds from me and my detector collegue, we have the exclusive authority, given by the museum, to search the area. These finds are now sent to the museum. All finds are registered with precise GPS-coordinates.
Now everything is frozen and with snow on top, but we will continue the searches when it gets mild again.

Thank you for your interest !
The Dane
