The farm is tickin' me off

Well, it's getting to be snake & tick season here in wonderful NC.
I've been getting a few short hunts in at the farm before it gets too hot here. So far I've had 5 ticks stuck on me, but fortunately no snakes yet. :D Ridley & I have pounded the grass areas pretty good, so the finds are getting tougher. I found these items right in front of the house in an area we both hit numerous times. I detected the area this time at a 45 degree angle from previous searches, and was surprised how much stuff we missed in this small area. Nothing earth shattering, but I was happy to find the eagle button. There are plenty of woods still to search, but that can wait until winter now. ;)
Today's lunch finds consisted of :
*a nice Eagle button about the size of a quarter. Since the eagles head is facing right, I'm assuming this button was made after 1941? Can anyone ID this button?
*a decorative silver piece stamped "sterling" on it. No idea what it was?
* a marble in the same hole as the sterling piece.
* asst'd buttons, and a brass or copper drawer knob?
*1969 dime. Darn, missed silver by 5 years. >:(
Thanks for looking,
MM

Nice Finds MM...

I wouldn't be too TICKED off...Didn't you find a DIAMOND RING at the farm.

I wish I could be more help on the button...

Cool Digs...Like the marble too...

Nick

Now that you mention it, YES I did. ;D Just sold it last week on E-bay & bought another Tesoro detector for my son and a set of headphones. Hopefully he can find some cool stuff now. ;)
Thanks,
MM

Re: The farm is tickin' me off

Yep. I know how ya feel, MM. Just yesterday I had a tick on my arm! :P Luckily I saw him before he settled in for dinner. :-X Haven't seen the snakes yet either, but I know they are there. :-\ And it's really bad when you finally get permission to hunt a site and Spring decides to kick in full force! All those vines and weeds growing at record pace. Someone here recently found a button like yours and I think it was said to be a Navy button? I dunno..but great button! Congrats on those finds!!!

Nana :)

Re: The farm is tickin' me off

Nice finds. The silver piece almost looks like it could be a dip pen ....I see the pendant attachment on it ....so wonder if they made dip pens like that.....

Re: The farm is tickin' me off

Nice digs, MM. I agree with Gypsyheart about the sterling item looking like a pen. The only thing I wonder about is why a loop on the end?

You know, its interesting what we have to put up with as MD'ers. Here in my town I'm only able to hunt for about 7 months per year because of snow. You got ticks to deal with. I think I like my snow after all.

Nana,
That other post you may be thinking about was mine too. ;D Here it is:
http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,75447.msg550482.html#msg550482

This button today was larger with a different backing.
I asked the property owner if their Dad, or any relative was in the Navy, but they said no.
This house was built in 1936, and there was one previous owner before them, so it must have been from that family?
Thanks,
MM

Re: The farm is tickin' me off

MM, Love your finds, the botton is a real winner. Seeing how we are neighbors and good friends.I hate to see you disappointed about the snakes,so I have shipped you a fresh supply of water mossicins, rattel snakes, copperheads, and a few large black snakes. It will come by Mule express. Enjoy ;D

No,I'm not,just pulling your chain ;D

Re: The farm is tickin' me off

I think your silver thingy is a 'dance card pencil/pen'. Pencil because back in those days, at a dance, you didn't just click you Bic... lead pencils were the thing. I have an old gold-plated one my grand gave me. At old-time dances, you had 'dance cards' to line up guys who wanted to dance w/ you. The tiny pencils were for that. I'll be photo-ready soon. Digging my old scanner out of the pile of stuff stacked away from house rehab project...and things are, shall we say, displaced.... nevertheless, that's what I think it is. Great finds!!!

Thanks Papa. I'll give them to my wife for our 25th wedding anniversary next month. Shhhhhhh, don't tell her. I want to get it on film, so I can win $10,000 on America's Funniest Home Videos. ;D
By the way, what are you doing up so late, it's almost 6:00pm? ;)

Re: The farm is tickin' me off

Did they make break down pipe stems out of sterling? I have one put away thats wood with sterling escutions connected by small sterling chains. Either that or maybe a snuff tube?????

Just a guess! Good finds!

Re: The farm is tickin' me off

Hey Miner more neat finds for you.Thats definately a propelling pencil. They hung them from chains and the end was turned to make the lead come out the end, then you turn it the other way and the lead goes back in.I have about 7 of them for sale in my antique store right now. They come in gold filled and sometimes gold as well.I have never dug one yet.Bet it belonged to the ring bearer. ;)

If you win,I get a finders fee ;D I know it's passed my bed time, but I'm off Friday, and the mule got loose ,........again.

You need any ground hogs to go with that ;D Maybe a black cat with white racing stripes ;D

Re: The farm is tickin' me off

MM... Found a pic online of your button... same damned one and says it's Indian War era... I want more specifics for ya' though so let me keep looking.

Is there a backmark?

Okay... I'm back. From this source (first button shown): http://www.southronrelics.com/civil_war_us_buttons.htm

Your's is a little different which can be accounted for by back marks / manufacturers. But I think you have a genuine button.

Looks like the next post with die hard digger is a help too! Good work!

Re: The farm is tickin' me off

Nice digs Miner.
I found the same button a while back. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,75094.0.html
I believe your button is pre 1941, I am pretty sure your eagle is facing left. I think you have to become the eagle when looking for the direction that it is facing. I also found a band uniform button in the same area, 1880 - 1920 so I am assuming my eagle and band button are in that time frame.
Glad I don't have to deal with snakes and ticks though!
HH,Steve
