THE FAKE OR SUSPECT FINDS THREAD - Post your FAKE OR SUSPECT find pics/story here...

So should I post or not? Confusion is running rampant. Is this a political correct way to put it?

Wow.... I am confused... so if I post an 1877 fake Indian Cent that I bought as real and then found out it was fake that will be ok??

Also can you please explain why if we all know something is not real, that someone cannot bring it to the posters attention? It would be like me buying the fake Indian and thinking it was real and posting it here, then I would be happy to have someone tell me its not real. I would want to know it was not real, not go own forever thinking it was real...
Thanks Gary from Oregon...

just friendly warnings because we know when this thread goes to 2 pages, or more,
they will read the first post then respond. and odds are there,
someone is going
to use the thread as a Springboard to attack, a today's or banner find they are jealous of .
now Our Warnings are there Whether they notice them or not... poster beware :unhappysmiley:
Yes you can tell by some that respond to post that have just read the OP post and went and made there post with out reading any of the other replies

Yea Why Not ? besides 9 out of 10,
Pictures would not be enough , But if you want Back-up or whatever
and are OK with someone telling you you are wrong, Go for it :tongue3:

again any answers should be taken with a grain of Salt.

My problems come in, Not in this thread but in Todays Finds, Or elsewhere when someone posts
something like an Arrow Head, treasure sign, Or Dinosaur Bone and Say they Know it's real and someone suggests they are foolish,
Wrong, or worse Lying.

Again if your Going to come out & ask for opinions though, Then you open yourself up. But if you make a statement rather then ask an opinion, Your statement is
to be taken Publicly as Scripture.

again not a problem, if you ask for open opinions.

If someone don't ask for opinions You can send them a PM advising of your opinion,
and ask if it's ok to post that opinion, But if they say "Get Bent"
you must let it go.

Actually when the thread "idea/brain fart" came about I was more looking for people to post things they KNOW are fake(s)... then if someone who has something that they "suspected" of fitting in here they would post that up looking for a "little more etc"....

I think the "suspected" part is what sent this thread screwy.

AARC,

Here's one for you found a few years back in a green space along the lake where I live.....since I live in an area going back to the late 1600's it is plausible that you could find a Spanish cob in my area and it had me going for awhile.

What gave it away is the outer lip around the outside left over from the molding process....just a modern knock off to sell to tourists I suspect.

I actually found a 2nd one later on at the same site and since it's across from a private school may very well have been souvenirs the students brought
home from an exchange program in Spain.

Ok AARC... Here is my contribution to this post. I think this will help people understand how many fake items are out on the market for sale... I got so good in the old days of spotting fake coins that I was at a major coin show one time and a dealer had a fake $20 ST Gaudens gold coin in his display case for sale with a price tag on it...I asked him how much he really wanted for the fake coin, he never answered. He open his case picked up the coin and put it under his table. He was trying to sell it to some unsuspecting collector. There are many fake US gold coins in shops for sale in the Caribbean. Be careful buying coins if your on a cruise.
I used to have approx 100 fake coins in my collection. Here are a few. The 1877 Indian head has tarnished over the years from when I bought it and I bought it as a real coin and found out after the fact that is was a really great counterfeit... Damn... The $1.00 Gold coin is real gold... just wasn't made by the right people... LOL

All of these are fakes... And this is just the base metal crap ones.
I have some that are actual silver as well.

Err oh sheesh the big penny made it in there... argg that damn thing.

Folks,

Here's another item to add to the pot....this religious medallion and chain is stamped 10k....it was found in a school yard sports field.

There's no stamp that says plated, electro plated, etc....given that most of the gilt has worn off this one was a no brainer....if you find a gold or silver stamped item....look for flaking, chipping or darker color in the dinged areas even when properly stamped.

Lots of plated items being sold/passed off as the real deal.

Sounds like what you're truly after is a "research area" where folks can post finds they themselves know to be fakes, or are positively determined/discovered as fakes via Q&A in the various forum threads? After a while, such a "library" of known counterfeits should be pretty useful - but the library would need to be indexed (and I'm not sure a simple forum does that).

I'm still pretty new here, so maybe the function can be made to work. (?)

Alternatively, (or perhaps in addition to), it might be nice to have sections that elaborate on the tell-tale signs of counterfeit items.
(Like gold-paint, instead of actual gold.) That way, forum users and visitors may benefit from the collective "wisdom" of the crowd.

An interesting reference thread is the goal...
Now IF it becomes that or not is yet to be seen...
Off to a rough start I would say... heh.

But hey... whatever it is ... it is... whatever it becomes or does not become... it will be.

Hi Bill... It looked so good to me at the time and I had bought and sold thousands of coins... It looked a bit like it had a oil sheen and dark spots like fingerprints in a way. The size the detail was perfect. I tried to sell it to a well know dealer here in Oregon and he looked at it for a second and tossed it back onto the counter, he then showed me these things. He is a coin expert for sure. Been in business for many years... I learned a lot from this big mistake...

Here is what I thought was a very bad shape seated half that I got after my Father in law passed, but couldn't figure why it looked so ruff. Cleaned it with baking soda and aluminum foil, and hot water. This is what I ended up with. LOL

Good example of a phony half....thanks for sharing.

SAM_0497.webp These are a few of the counterfeit coins/medallions that I have picked up over the years. I keep them because it fascinates me that people put so much into making a way to fool people for money.
