I went with some digging buds to a well known site. We were dodging rain showers, but got a few hours in. I wasn't getting many signals but trash, but topped a small hill and got a solid "87" on the Deus. Unfortunately, that's what aluminum trash on this farm rings up at. Out pops a round disc, which with a LOT of hard work to figure it out is a local made Confederate Infantry "I" button. Next up were three small pieces of fired, shredded Civil War lead. As the rain picked up I started heading back to the car and almost immediately got my only minie of the day and a nice surprise, Confederate I button #2. This one has an iron back. The first button has no backmark, and even though it's all there, got flattened pretty good. Button #2 was near a big rock, and the plow didn't smash it. 2019 is heading to a good start.

Thanks. These are the first of each of their kind I have ever found. I have found a couple of the solid cast ones, seems like centuries ago, but this was a real surprise.

This "retirement" thing may be fun!

I had to use an Optivisor to see the "feet" of the "I" on the first, flattened button. The other one, kinda stared back at me. I have found two Confederate buttons on the same site before but if memory serves (that's a joke in itself), never two on the same day. I ... cannot ... move. Ow.

Truth, it's ALL private permissions. Two of my permissions have been POUNDED since the 1960's. The one today is well known and the farmer has let a ton of folks on the property, HOWEVER it is loaded with heavy aluminum trash, and stuff is still hiding. One homesite, IN THEORY should have been on this little grassy knoll, and sure enough, found a 19th century foundation there. Cat's intuition. I think my machine helps, but what really helps is because I'm so blasted SLOW anymore I don't zig zag with the machine and cover small areas, better.

What, no gold coin this Hunt? Don’t even bother posting anymore without one.

Haha, well done StC!

Only two gold items of any kind in 2018. I didn't go to the beaches but went to look for American Indian artifacts those weekends instead.

Very nice Smokey!!! Still waiting on Confederate buttons...only found Union so far here...

I have probably 25 Union to each Confederate. Almost all of the Union buttons came for a 2 acre back yard.

I know they are here..several battles and skirmishes within 20 miles of home. My town changed hands several times between north and south due to it being a major player/supplier of lead for the war efforts...just haven't found my CSA yet...

They are there. The flattened one today was totally unexpected. Last time I visited the site I found NO Civil War relics at all. I actually sat down on my portable chair and had the guys come over to figure out what it was. I figured Confederate due to the diameter, they nailed the ID for me.

Good looking button's there smokey, smashed or not!! :occasion14:

I cant help but wonder if the bullet hit its mark and another soldier came over to render help by ripping the shirt open and popping the buttons?
