Bigscoop, wish you all the best. I'll be following your adventures!
Frankn, when my son and I left Texas in March of 2007, heading to Idaho, we were in an old 31' Pace Arrow. We stayed one night in an RV park, one on the empty part of a shopping center parking lot, and one on a Walmart lot. Though not vicious, we had 2 small dogs with us that would start barking at any noise. Also a shotgun, so we weren't really afraid of being molested. We went back to Texas in September; and 2 months later, came back to Idaho. We spent one or two nights in RV parks; but mostly in rest stops and Walmart lots.
Yea, those free overnites more than make up for the added fuel cost plus the added freedom to instantly change your plans is a big plus. I have seen road signs like that very interesting car collection up around the Dakotas or Walls drug and stayed the night there for free. Most people don't know how comfortable a MH really is. Even a small one like my 22' has all the comforts of home. I actually like the small ones the best. I started with a Grayhound that I converted, but I soon realized that all that extra room was not required and was actually a deterrent to getting into places like gold claims.
My second one was an 18' Cruise Master. I enjoyed it for it's ability to get in tight places, but it got old and started to have major structural problems. The Xplorer is Ideal for a traveler like me and being built on a Ram 3500 chassis beefed up to 12000 pounds capacity, I can get it serviced at most Dodge dealers.
Some cars from that collection. Frank...-
