Finally had that moment where you dig that thing you'd never expect and it just makes you hoot and start talking to yourself. I was by myself (probabley a good thing too, but still wish the wife had been there to share my excitement. Hehe, she'll be in for a surprise when she gets home!) digging around a stretch of rocky field hoping for a few older coins, buckles, flat buttons or maybe if I was lucky another miniball since I'd found one there awhile back. Got a decent signal close to a large flat rock and spent a good while trying to get between the rocks where I figured maybe a nickel or button coulda settled. Started making a larger hole than I usually do trying to find the tricky bugger and started getting a bit frustrated at myself for not finding it. (really thinking about a pinpointer in the near future now, lol.) I was really getting discouraged and started thinking about that next hole that would shorely have something better in it when I decided to move the large flat rock beside the hole incase it was right near the edge of it. As soon as I moved it I seen a small piece of thin greenish metal. "Sweet" I thought, " Maybe a nice piece of ornate copper or something." Slowly brushed the dirt off it and pulled it out then the big US hit me. Lol, I immediately had to put it down and started making odd noises with my eyes bulging probaley. Hehe, what a feeling! Still seems a bit unreal. Never expected to find something like that there. Think its an ammunition box plate with the backing missing. Any good ideas on preserving it are really welcome. For me this is definitely my WOW moment so far. Amazing to be able to hold something like that and imagine how it got there. HH indeed!

And as an odd twist of fate it is also the 10th anniversary of the first date I had with my wife! Hehe, I guess that's my own anniversary gift to myself in a way. Next weekend is the 6th anniversary of our wedding so hopefully we'll both be able to get off work and maybe spend it together doing a few things together and maybe even be able to go dig together and find that next OMG moment together. And of course many more!

holy sweet dirt fishing that is freaking cool

don't you love that rush !!

One of the greatest parts of our hobby is the wonder and imagination of where the item has been, how it got to where we found it and whose hands held it last! Wonderful find and happy anniversary.

Sweet find!!

Nice! Happy for you! :)

Still looking for my first . . . never have swung the coil in the right spot. You don't need to do much to preserve brass as long as it's not being handled. Some just go for warm soapy water and a toothbrush (lightly) which will preserve that wonderful green patina. Some prefer a cleaner look and will take a solution of 50% water and 50% ammonia and soak for only a few minutes and brush LIGHTLY with a SOFT toothbrush. (Then rinse well in clean water) I've heard vinegar works too. But whichever you do, soak it only for a few minutes or you'll "clean" it more than you may want to. I like just warm soapy water and nothing else, but that's just me. I've heard of older hunters applying vaseline, but that will darken it and make it a little shiny. I don't go there, I like the green! Sweet find!

Great find, I have no hope of finding something like that.

Yes, I know that feeling - great find!

Very nice find and gift to yourself indeed, an easy one to remember when you found it also.

I agree with BuckleBoy on this one. Unless you're overseas (probabley still a remote chance there too) you always have a possibility to find anything. I would never have thought I could either, but Tada!

Really, really neat find.

Happy Anniversary!
