I slipped out early on Saturday morning to meet Smittyman. The sunrise was nice, with a few little pink clouds.

Smittyman had acquired a permission for us, however after several hours in the sticker bushes, we decided to head to an easier place to hunt... and we were finding nothing but trash!

The second place was an old house site. There weren't many signals, as I suspect the place has been heavily hunted before. I got a 57 on the Deus, a little high for a nickel, but nice and strong. I figured that I would go ahead and rescue that pull tab. To my surprise a '46 Jefferson came out of the hole. I filled the hole in, and scanned again. This time there was a high tone!

I took a big scoop out of the hole, and saw this in the pile.

BINGO! The merc was hiding under the nickel. Ended up with a couple of wheats, the nickel and the merc.

Once again, digging the iffy signals produces a coin missed by the other hunter!

YTD silver coins: 47

Thanks for looking and best of luck on your hunts.

well done my friend! Those guys who are screen watchers and dig only perfect signals miss a lot more than they think...

Nice finds, Tom. Reminds me of the same type signal I dug a few years ago in an area that was super clean, hardly any trash targets or any targets at all. I got a deep high nickel signal and found it was a sandwiched war nickel and merc. The only other good dig that day, again, in the super clean area, was a wide nickel signal. I was thinking a chain but it was three nickels spread out a little that were hiding a 64 quarter. Fun stuff!

When I started I was heavier and slower, I also spent time trying to determine whether to dig or not. I'm slimmer and stronger now, so I just dig them all. It makes the short game tougher, but the long game is WAY more rewarding.

Key: You will never know until you DIG!

Nice digs Tom. I dig more iffy's when there aren't many good targets at a site. Thank God good targets were scarce or that pocket spill would still be buried.

Some days I dig every repeatable signal no matter what it is! But I love a clean 4 way 93!
Oh yeah, nice finds buddy!

Nice job on the Mercury find! :occasion14:

I can tell you that there's usually rust in the hole from my clean 94s. :laughing7:

Way to go Tom on getting the silver from under the nickel.

Great finds!

Question for ya, was that a scratchy tone the first time you went over it, or were the numbers and tones all over the place?

Excellent detecting and score on that Silver...they can run but not hide...nicely done..

It was a little "wider" than a coin signal, but a nice steady 57 from both directions, and sounded good, very solid sounding. A nickel should be about a 53, so it was a little bit higher. The nickel was about 5" down in moist sandy soil, the merc a little bit deeper. I honestly though it was a pull tab.
