Low Country
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
Was out digging at local spot that has had a handful of coils over it and got a lucky leftover....REALLY lucky from what I have gathered so far. The back mark is "Waterbury Button Co." and I believe is 1840s-1860s...? I know these TEXAS buttons are rare and its not something I was ever expecting to dig here in Charleston. I didn't even realize what I had until a buddy pointed it out via text (Thanks Allen!). It immediately came back to me that I had in fact seen these buttons posted before here on T-Net. I don't often post my finds but I though this one should be shared. I think this has the potential to be my most valuable find ever!!?? If anyone can help with advice on how to go about getting it appraised I would greatly appreciate it!!

Thanks for looking and HH to all

That is a nice button, but I think.. according to McGuinn's book, that particular backmark dates from 1870-1900.

That is a beautiful button congrats! You have to low how that sugar sand treats brass after all these years. I thought you might like to look at this link by Relicman who has a great photographic catalog of button backmarks.

Button backmarks, Waterbury Button Co , Waterbury Connecticut.

If you scroll down to near bottom of the page you should be able to see the same backmark as yours. According to his catalog he has that waterbury backmark listed as a post civil war button. Best of luck uncovering the history of that button. The uncovering and research is often the best part because you can learn quite a bit of history. Good luck digging!

Great link and great info! So if I am reading Relicman's info correct, they started using that BM in 1849 and continued through 1900. Quote:

"Waterbury Button Co began producing buttons under its own name in 1849 and is the only Civil War button producer operating today. WBC did not produce any buttons for any of the southern states before the war or for the Confederacy, but they did produce large quantities for the north."

And, what I have been told (from a few more knowledgeable than me on CW) that this button is not as much associated with CW because of the later dates of production. That being said, this particular site has only produced CW era and earlier of both Union and CSA items so I would assume this was CW related. It now sounds like it may more so be a Union button or related somehow. Maybe even post war but very close.
I have sent a few pictures to the Waterbury co and hope to get their response. I will update this post if I do.
Thanks you for all the great insite from the responses and I hope to learn even more in this process.

This hobby never gets old!!!! Our US history is short in comparison to the world but so interesting and full of small things that paint such a bigger picture. I truly enjoy it!

Sorry for mistakes, I am on a mobile.
