Was out Detecting and passed a fellow on the side of the road. Stopped, and asked what he knew about the area and the old home sites there about. Conversation lasted more than an hour with him leading me out across a field and into some woods where there was remnants of old house and chicken coop- probably 1910-1920 era and long ago rotten and dilapidated. Made a short little hunt as he had left back to his house. Found a few wheat pennies and such but nothing significant till I can across an old water well- covered with a ----> Texaco sign! Its a green T late 1930's to early 40's Porcelain 42" single sided sign. I flipped out!- and had to go ask what he wanted for it...
He said noting, that I could have it- just cover the hole with something that would last. Well, I told him what it was worth and that I'd pay him a good portion of that and pick it up next time out. Next time out was several months later... Didn't have any metal but just wanted to check on it. Asked how much he wanted a second time- again Nothing. I offered and offered again- but he'd accept nothing!
Two more months later- Finally cut a piece of metal to replace it with and headed out to see him again. For the third time I offered cash but got stubborn refusal to accept it. Then- I offered a bottle of my homemade wild muscadine wine and a bottle of honey my bee's made this year. He accepted that as fair trade with a smile... So, I suppose my wine and honey is worth a hundred and a half a bottle... Probably not... Pretty sure I got the better end of the trade no matter how hard I tried to make it more even.
