Tellers asking questions

It seems that in the last week or so I have noticed that at almost every bank I buy from has a teller who asks "can I ask you, what are you looking for in these boxes?". I don't know if it is coincidence or if so many people are buying the boxes the tellers are curious. About a month ago when I started doing this none of them asked questions. I guess they thought I was some nut that wanted to buy alot of halves. But now even in banks I am at for the first time, tellers are asking alot of questions.

They will also tell stories of people bringing in rolls of silver coins and them (the teller telling me the story) sharing the coins with other tellers. I have heard this at least 3 times in the past week from different banks. Lord knows how much silver comes in that is grabbed by the tellers that never makes it to the hands of non-bankemployed CRHers. But if I was them I would do the same thing. More power to them I guess.

Anyone else experience this?

I just tell them I play with them or that I throw them in wishing wells (inflation ya know). And of course when dumping and I am asked where I get all of these. I tell them I clean out wishing wells. "Nobody wishes with 50 cent pieces" they say "I do" I say haha. Always keep them guessing.
One of my vault tellers was asked what I do with all these (8 boxes at a time), she said I guess he's looking for something- must not have found it yet cause he comes back every week. I just nodded and said "yea but I'm gettin close- I can feel it" LOL. HH Mark

They say honesty is the best policy, but that isn't always true in this game. I have had a lot of tellers asking me lately what I need all the halves for. I usually just tell them they are becoming rare, and I figured I would put together some sets for down the road. Tell them you are looking for silver and see how their attitude changes. Tellers seem more helpful if they don't know about you making money off of them.

I ask them from who or where do you get all your money? Oh. sorry sir, that is confidential, for security reasons you know. Then I tell them I can't tell them my source for the same reason.

LMAO ha I like that one S_F

Damn now I am really kinda ticked off by all those questions ... S-F brought up a great point , when I cold call banks and asked for halves they dont want to tell me how many they have ... I have to give them my name etc. and then when I go into the banks with canvas bag they act like I am going to jack the place .... now who in there right mental bloody mind is going to rob a bank for halves ...

Anyways yeah Jim at first the tellers acted like I was hitting the crack pipe then they start asking me questions ( I hate questions ) ... I tell them that I build lots of sets and then trade them on the internet with friends from Canada for their coins etc.( I never mention silver then I start rattling off stuff about computers and the net and that always drives them away , ha

I usually tell them that my kids getting them to complete sets. for some reason they like to hear that and they are willing to help.

Be honest.

Don't mention the S word. Just tell them you are coin collector, period. I tell them I search for older coins to complete my books.
You'd be surprised how many tellers look for those older coins to help me out. One dump bank has had at least 1 silver coin (3 last week), waiting for me for the last 6 months!

I usually tell them I am a collector and complete sets and sell and trade them. I aslo tell them I make about 25 cents an hour and chuckle. Sometimes they ask about silver and I tell them every now and then I find some, but not often. I then ask them to call me if they ever get any "old" coins. Like TXTIM said, I get a lot of call this way, some good, some not, but I take whatever they have and dump it somewhere.

Yup a lot of tellers scoop up the good coins. That's why it's almost a miracle that we find any at all.....

Just yesterday a teller was saying one of the other tellers opened a roll of Quarters and it was full of silver....She sold it on e bay for $90 he said.... He than said this job has it's perks I guess.......

Mojo

I also hear stories of how someone coming in and trying to cash in silver coins and the tellers advising them to take them to a coin dealer.... But in a lot of cases the coins are wrapped and the teller wouldn't even know what was in them unless they audit the rolls.

At the bank where I pick up mine, I just tell them that I believe very strongly in bringing these coins back into circulation & if we all do our part we can achieve just that. They always ask why would you go through so much trouble, & they think im crazy. :) Better than telling them the truth.

I think we all are a little crazy.... ;D

As TXTim says, just say you are a coin collector. Good grief! What's so hard about that? And it's a truthful answer too.

ditto

I usually say old coins, proofs, and errors if anyone wants to press further.

Last road trip I took I said a friend of mine's daughter was getting into all the poker shows on TV, and my friend asked me to find him some halves to use as chips.
They thought it was cute.
