I normally have my dumps in bags of $500 so I know exactly what is in each bag I dump. I had 2K to dump today but in past week, the banks have been keeping the canvas bags so when I went today I had 3 big bags and no idea what was in each, but knew total was 2k. I went on my lunch to dump the biggest of the 2 of the 3 biggest bags and when running the 1st it was clear I would not have time to have them both. Teller comes back and tells me my total is $1615 and pays me and off I go without giving it much thought. Once I got back to work, I looked at the remaining 2 bags and more importantly, lifted them to get an idea on weight. I have got very good at knowing what a bag of $500 Halves feels like and I knew there was way more than $385 left in my bags. However, without getting them counted I couldn't be 100% sure so after work I went to another bank and ran them and sure enough, I had 3k in my pocket. (I could not go back to original bank as I had kids to pick up and errands to run in the other direction.) By that time there was no way to make it back to the other bank by the time they closed.
The teller has to be a wreck as there is no way for them to know who they gave that money to. This is a branch that I never go to and they did not ask me my account number or anything so they have no way to tie the shortage to me even if they figure out the teller paid too much to me. I hope she was not fired as I could certainly see that happening as the amount of shortage was so large. I will call the bank as soon as they open and tell them I will be over on my lunch.
Had I had my canvass bags, I would have caught the mistake once she told me the total, so this goes to show how important it is to stay organized. I will never go into a bank again without knowing there is exactly $500 in each bag like I normally do. I think they call that Murphy's Law.
