I stopped at a branch of my bank that I'd never been to before.
I asked politely "Do you have any half-dollar coins?"
She says, "I only have these two."
I immediately saw the silver. She saw it a 1/2 second after I did, but could comprehend what she was looking at. It went something like this:
She looks at the edge, starts to say something: "This one is . . . "; then she looks at the front; looks at the back; looks at me; and then completely freezes. She didn't know what to say or do. She finally laid it down next to the other one. I handed her a dollar and she picked up the two 1976 bicentennials and handed them to me.
I'm pretty sure what had her so flustered is that she knew it seemed silver, but it was a '76, just like the other one she was giving me. It obviously wasn't silver. It didn't make sense to her and she didn't know how to express the internal conflict with words, so she gave up. Woo Hoo. I got a '76-S for $0.50. I've been smiling ever since.
