Welcome to Tnet from Toronto Paul! :hello:
I'm not sure what the image represents, but it's likely of a religious nature.

"The New Testament's Book of Revelation describes the Woman of the Apocalypse: And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars. And she being with child cried, travailing in birth. .... And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. In Catholic tradition she has been identified with the Blessed Virgin Mary, especially in connection with the Immaculate Conception. Mary is often pictured with a crown or Circle of Stars."

Is there anything on the back?
I don't think think it's gold, more likely brass. :icon_scratch:

For sure it’s a Catholic medallion of Virgin Mary as Queen with crown, often represented like this:

https://www.shutterstock.com/es/image-photo/basrelief-virgin-mary-crown-450823558

The 12 stars are usually taken as representing the 12 apostles. There are countless variations on this theme, usually associated with claimed visions/appearances of Mary (Marian apparitions) or shrines to her. The most common are ‘Miraculous Medallions’ (our Lady of Graces) but it doesn’t have the other design elements associated with those, unless there is a cross with the letter M on the back.

There are various others, such as Our Lady of… Guadalupe/Lourdes/Fatima/La Salette/Pellevoisin etc. and if it has a specific association you may find yours with a bit of Googling.

As said, it appears to brass or bronze and not of intrinsic material value.

Possible, but the Black Madonna (Our Lady of Częstochowa) is most usually depicted holding the infant Jesus. More likely, you'll need to be looking for another "Our Lady of..." if it has a specific connection rather than being a generic.

This would make it Polish in origin though.

Where is OP ?

Sorry, I should have said "e.g. Our Lady of Częstochowa" since it's one of the more commonly seen ones. There are 400+ Black Madonna concepts throughout the European Catholic World and many others outside Europe. More "Our Lady of..." interpretations than you can shake a stick at.

A Big Welcome to You to the Tnet forum from Georgia. That is a nice religious medallion you have. It looks as if you will have a positive ID on this piece in the very near future. Is there a family story associated with this piece from the war?
