Technology vs depth

Hello, first post for me here, making me a "newbie", but have been swinging a coil here in Green Bay for 15 years.

Cherokee's post from yesterday had a string regarding depth of new detectors versus old. Recently I wore out the pinpoint button on the touchpad of my GTA 500, and in the process of finding a dealer to buy a new touchpad from, was told that I should not invest in "5 year old technolgy" and should just buy a new unit. I am wondering if new technology offers anything more than my current unit, and even then is it worth $800?

So this seemed like a great forum to get some real-world information. I use the stock 8 1/2" coil on my machine, and NEVER get a solid signal over 5.5". I will get a penny signal at 3" perhaps that will turnout to be something copper at a deeper depth, but will not get a quarter signal at 7" for example.

And I see people posting that they have found coins/rings at depths > 6", and my question is this: does your display read this deep, or do you get an "endless signal" and just keep digging until something comes up? Also, using what machine and how old is it?

Hi Deepseeker
With regards to depth- a lot depends on the ground you are detecting. In real stable soil- old coins and relics are not very deep-less than 6". However, in unstable soil good stuff is found a lot deeper. I owe an X-5 which is capable of finding? small coins at depths from 8" to 10" in my soil. Yes if you in an area in which your detecting friends( in clubs) are exceeding 6" depths for old coins- yes perhaps it is time for an upgrade.

But upgrading to an $800 model well that depends on your addiction. I have heard some good things about the Garrett Ace 250 which is $200(I don't know if this would be a good depth upgrade- check out reviews). Also the new Tesoro Chibola and Vanquero ($350 to $450) seem to have good reviews and these would offer a good depth upgrade.

However, If I was upgrading I would wait until spring and see what will be introduced this winter. You never know when they will finally introduce a? real realible discriminating PI which would be a true technology jump.

George......Ive got an Ace 250 on the way. Im hoping/assuming that it will be an upgrade over the BH Pioneer I have now.......wont it???

well what you were told is basically true for today's top-of-the-line detectors. I routinely dig dime sized at stuff 8"-10", and LC's at 12" or more. My other two VLF name brand detectors cannot touch those depths in highly mineralized soil. And both were top-of-the-line models when I purchased them.

Minelab Explorer II tells me basic depth and is fairly accurate. Sometimes it's even deeper than scale on VDI. But I still say buy what you can afford and realize that technology has vastly improved in last 10 years. Least I think it has...? :)

i use a whites xlt when i dig relics i have dug 3 ringers out over 10 inches deep its so accurate sometimes it scares me 95% of the time if im just coin shooting if it says its a quarter you better believe its a quarter i did many hours of research was going to get the dfx but wasn't in my budget so i went to ebay and got my xlt for 450

I don't know about technology but Troy of Troy Detectors asked me if I had ever tried setting a magnet down in the soil of an area I was hunting. He said the more iron particles that stuck to the magnet the less depth you would get no matter what detector you were using. Troy used to be an engineer for Tesoro and now has his own company.

I would have to agree with Ocean7 and Coin_saver. I have an Explorer II and with the stock 10.5" coil I find coins at ~12" deep. I usually adjust the sensitivity and response to get that depth. Also, the X1 Probe that goes with the Explorer II is a must to minimize pinpointing time. I've been using it for about three months and have found alot of clad, silver, and relics. No gold yet but still trying when I get the time.

Hope this helps.

I've got a couple Fisher CZ models and they are capable of getting coins to 12" no problem. My older 1235X has found rings to 7" deep. The CZ line is more than 10 year-old technology now. Hopefully you'll see MD'ing is not like a lot of other fields. 10 year old technology is not outdated due to the basic operating principles of MD'ing. If you want to get the latest CZ, Whites or Minelab it looks like you'll be at the edge of the envelope for performance but I'd say all the mfrs have midrange machines that will outperform what your seeing now.

Maybe your machine or coil has some kind of problem with depth due to material defect. Have you talked to the support people for your machine?
