Tampa area beaches

Ahoy mates!

Will be taking the wife to Tampa in 2 weeks and plan to do some beach hunting. Any tips about the area will certainly be helpful

Where will you be staying? I mean exactly where, I can be of more help, Tampa is a big area.

You have many beaches there to try out. All have been hit hard, but that doesn't mean there isn't some goodies still there waiting to be found.

I mostly hunt in the water around Tampa. I would suggest you check the Tide Tables and try to hit the beaches starting about 2 hours before absolute low tide and hunt in the wet sand as close to the water as you can if you have a detector that will handle that. Pinellas County uses beach sweeper/cleaner machines every morning to groom the sand. They pretty much clean the sand of most things. The most I have found on the beach sand there was Dimes. Seems like the Dimes are too small to be caught up in the hopper of the machines.

Easy to find from Tampa, if your new to the area, is Clearwater Beach.

Simply follow Hwy 60 (major highway) from anywhere in Tampa (runs right past Tampa International Airport) and head west. Hwy 60 eventually ends at the, yep, BEACH!

There is a long pier there, lots of restaurants and plenty of hunting area. You can view the web cam of the pier from:

If you got time. check out www.beachtourism.com for a web cam of clearwater beach. Lots of construction going on in the main beach area though.

you will find all modern stuff, unless someone happens to be carring something old in there pocket. I got a 1903 swiss coin a few weeks back an I am sure it was not lost to long ago. these beaches have a high turn over rate, nothing is lost for very long ,but there is always that 1 in a million.
