Do I detect a hint of political correctness here? If we're after "treasure", why can't we say so. I understand that it might cost us a place to hunt every now and then, but if we have to walk the political correctness line, which we all say we hate, is it really worth it? I know it's not that big a deal, just a T shirt, but I'm a treasure hunter and proud of it.
P.S. Don't get me wrong, I like the suggestions. Just not sure about the reasons.
Yes, it is a bit of political correctness if you want to call it that, but not to appease anyone. It is simply a matter of survival.
What we think of as treasure is not the same as the general population. This subject is not new, as this was a hot button issue back in the 70's as well. When the authorities have a problem with grave robbers or artifact hunters on protected land, they are referred to by them and the media as "treasure hunters". There aren't many treasure hunters out there(at least the don't talk about it) today. And besides,if I was a treasure hunter I wouldn't be advertising it. The word treasure was adopted by the detector manufacturers to sell units, and by the detecting community back in the good old days. Back before all the regulations and permits. Nowadays we who enjoy the outdoors can be shut out of areas if an "expert" claims we are killing a rare plant or bug. The wrong word can be the fuel for some misguided eco freak. If someone asks me if I am looking for treasure, I smile and say ..No I'm just looking for coins. I'm not trying to hide anything and I'm not lying to them.
"If your cat had kittens in the oven, you wouldn't call em biscuits" now would you? lol
Besides, I think more people can relate to terms like artifact or relic recovery and /or preservation.
Hey jbot! Thanks for bringing that up, I was hoping someone would. It is good to talk about all the possible pros & cons of our hobby. It keeps us all more aware of everything.
