My wife bought this sword for me when she was working for an antique dealer sometime back. An elderly gentleman came into the store and asked her if she would give him $20.00 for the sword. She immediately gave him the money and called the dealer to ask her if she could buy it from the store for the same amount. The dealer quickly agreed, so she brought it home and gave it to me for my birthday that year. It measures 21-1/2" long, without the scabbard. The scabbard is made of wood and has silver foil wrapped around it. There are no identifying marks on it at all. Any Information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.........

I can't find anything with a similar handle shape in so short a blade but I am inclined to think it is a cuttoe, hunting sword or hanger. These were carried in peacetime to give a coup de merci to wounded game. In times of war they were preferred by boarding parties and as a back-up for foot soldiers.

The hunting swords all seem to have a grip that is pretty much a flat knuckle bow, while yours has a basket. That's leading me more towards a cuttoe/cutlass that would have the added protection and punching effect.

From the material and workmanship I would guess it is from perhaps India or a related country in that part of the world. I dont think it is American made or Engish. Are you sure there are any markings on it at all? I have also seen swords with wood scabbbards from the P. I.'s.

Charlie P,

What time periods were the Cuttoe/Cutlass made? Thats interesting about hunting swords. Never actually thought about it, but its the same reason for the hunting knife. Used one a couple of times on deer hunts for the ole coup de merci.

dg39,
There are some marks on, but nothing legible. Appears to be some punch marks, but they are in a uniform manner. I'll break out the macro zoom and see if I can get some close up's and post them in the morning. By the way, what's a P.I. ?

DCMatt,

Very Nice!!!!!! More like a skirmish.

Thanks fellows

Dg39 mentioned that the sword could be from India. I think he is on the right track.

It looks like a Sikh kirpan - the religious ceremonial sword carried by Sikhs. It is one of the five articles of faith for Sikhs.
I believe it is to remind them of the fight for justice.

These swords were in the news here in Washington DC recently. The Pope is coming to visit. Religious leaders of all faiths have been invited to the Papal event. The US Secret Service, in charge of the Pope's security while he is here, won't allow the Sikhs to wear the kirpans to the event. The Sikhs have declined the invitation.

The only markings I can find that arent scrathes or dings, are some punch marks around the handle. Dont know if they mean anything, but take a look and let me know if this helps.

DCMatt,
A Sikh kirpan, at first I thought you were just BS'ing, till I looked it up. COOL. My reply was gonna be that your a Sickh juan :laughing7:. But thanks for all the info.
