Seen a beautiful dug calvary sword on today's finds a while ago and it got me thinking about mine. Mine was not dug but was given to me by my grandmother 40 years ago. All I remember her saying is that it had been in the family for a long time. No one else seems to know anything about it. On one side of the blade, at the hilt, it is stamped US with the letters D.F.M. then 1804. The other side is hard to read but it looks like, Emerson, then first two letters ST and I can't read the rest. I would love to know more about it. Hard to tell from pic but it is 41 inches overall Thanks for any help.

Looks like you have a Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber made by Emerson & Silver Trenton N.J. Nice one even though it looks to be missing the leather and wire wrap on the grip.
Cavalry saber, Model 1860 Emerson & Silver.

From the info I could find Emerson & Silver produced 27,060 Model 1860 sabers in 1864 and 1865. The inspector Dexter F. Moseman or D.F.M. was used in 1864. In 1865 a different inspector was used. If anyone has more or more accurate info please feel free to add. This is just what I found on the web.
