Well, there's the obvious; an angel is emerging from a cloud and grabbing the blade to stop the standing man from beheading the kneeling man. The inscription translates into "Obedience - Love." I noticed a small fleur d' lis in the lower left. Does that mean the kneeling man is French? I'd like to get a better look at the image directly behind (left of) the kneeling man and also whatever is behind the sword-wielder. Anything on the other side of the blade?

Did a little bit of research and found out that the angel Sealtiel supposedly stopped Abraham from sacrificing his son, Isaac, in the bible's Genesis 22:12. Sealtiel is said to be the angel of obedience (ie Abraham agreeing to off his kid) and love. I'm thinking that's where the image comes from. That said, I'm wondering if the image behind Isaac is an alter. I'm now thinking the fleur d' lis may indeed indicate the maker of the sword was French.

This is a 1730's basket hilt claymore, Yours is a lot older from looking at the blade style.
