✅ SOLVED Sword hilt?

I thought it was a sword hilt as soon as I pulled it from the ground. I am not sure what type of metal it is. One side of the guard is broken. There is a nice design on the handle. The handle is hollow like a tang went through it. So am I right or is this just a fancy letter opener? The site it came from is old and located in newburgh ny. A few 1700s coins came out of the ground at this spot. There was a lot of activity in this area during the revolution. Could this be from the revolution?
 

There is something amusingly out of place about the second photo ..

It looks more like a broken hilt from a boot knife, or sword hilt dagger, similar to this one:
