went back to a yankee camp ive been hunting for awhile, had found a couple bullets when i got a good tone that sounded different from a bullet, and out pops the soldier carved eagle breastplate, must have had a bit of time on his hands to cut the eagle out of the breastplate, also found a large harmonica reed and a nice GS eagle button as well.

i saw one earlier online that had been found in a camp near Corinth, it was only partially cut out of the breastplate but could find no others online that were completely cut out like the one i found, in crouch's artifact book there is a pic of one that is cut out of a breastplate

Awesome find. How about a photo of the back??

My friend
That is a phenomenal find
Anything that has been modified by a homesick soldier is nothing short of special. I'd take that over a perfect birdie any day! Super find

:icon_scratch: The eagle does look different carved out of the plate .

VERY Kool CW relic ! ??? interesting

Very Nice

While the Eagle is very beautiful (I would love to have found it) in the first 2 pictures it "looks" as if there is a small Grey area where the olive branch may have broken off recently ( it seems that it would have broken off easily as that is a weak point) ; so maybe you can go back and look for the lost piece. Just a thought , the piece is great the way it is. Way to go..:thumbsup:

Davers, the olive branch was not there checked thoroughly, where u see the grey spot there was a very small piece of the brass sticking off there but the lead fill behind it was gone and it broke off while being transported home, but it was a very small piece

u can actually see the that small piece still attached in the bottom pic before it came off

took the carved eagle to show Ran Hundley at Sgt Rikers and he said in all his years of hunting and running the shop this is only the 3rd eagle cut out of a breastplate that he has seen, very unique.

WTG. You know that was a cherished possession for the soldier that did it. All great finds. Don't you wish DNA could identify the person that played that harmonic? Thanks for letting us see.

Sent from my iPad using TreasureNet

Old dude, i would like to see the harmonica, that reed is huge haha, yea after taking the time to cut that out and then losing it i would be kinda bummed if i were him haha

That's just about as cool as it gets. I love personalized items like that. Great recovery.

Man that is a killer find. I'd much rather have that than the whole plate! GREAT recovery there!!!

I'm surprised VOL-1266 hasnt replied to this post yet!

Calmer - I'm as green as old brass with envy. My dad found one similar to yours back in the 60s. he also found a similarly carved Jeff Davis Tie-Back. I still have both. I'll post a couple of pictures early next week . . . I've never found one though. Nice find!

Here are the pics as promised. My breastplate was not carved as much as yours. Also, the lead backing is missing.

And here's the altered Jeff-Davis Tieback:

parsonwalker - those are some great pieces you have there

Thanks. Can't take any credit for these - My Dad found these over 50 years ago using a modified Korean war mine detector! I notice you have a Tejon, Calmerthanu. Me too. How do you decide which to use? I mean, the Minelab or the Tejon? Do you use one primarily for coins, the other for relics, or does the kind of soil make you choose one over the other, or what?

parsonwalker - for the past year i pretty much only use the Tejon, that machine is like meat n potatoes, i love it, for relics and coins its been great, i normally only use the minelab x-terra these days for shoreline hunting, most people probably would not think that but it does a good job on some of the river shorelines that im near
