'Sweated' Gold Coins

Huh, never heard that one. I wonder if those lightweight coins are still around today.

There were also “clipped gold coins”, where folks handling large amounts of gold coins would shave a little off the edges before passing the coin on. The reeding was added to combat this.

most likely if there are, They get Mistaken for Chinese Countrfeits
once weighed.

The only chemical mixture I know of which is capable of etching or dissolving gold is "aqua regia", a fuming mixture of nitric and hydrochloric acids. It attacks all metals, and, as you can imagine, is very injurious to human tissues. It would take a special lab to use it safely. I don't know how gold dissolved into it could be recovered.

This problem was solved many years ago. Quick Google search will explain the recovery method.

'chemical mixture' ... and then there is Hg. Have you seen a coin acid stripped of clad revealing a copper core which still looks like a coin?

A similar result should occur with Hg on a gold coin.

Take only 5% and who would notice without weighing it?

using the word "Sweating" Confusing. it's not Like 'Sweating Bullets'. there is no moisture involved.

Sweating. In the process of sweating, coins were placed in a bag and shaken. The bits of metal that had worn off the coins were recovered from the bottom of the bag. Sweating tended to wear the coin in a more natural way than clipping, and so was harder to detect.
