the story of the coins coming up from some guys drilling a well down there. I'm trying to find it now as I keeps notes of things I read and references incase I am ever in that area I have something to search for. Unfortunately I do it with paper and pencil still lol

I had something more in detail to what your looking for on here but I just removed it so I am gonna pm you with it. After reading Ivan's words and I read Marc's story today how his find was taken from others jumping his claim so to speak tossing out years of hard work. I figure your hard work deserves you the opportunity of finding it.

it could be us cent coins or confederate cent coins --- both were used as money by the confederates -- either way if you found any old civil war era coins / money stashed out in the swamps -- with the tales of hidden confederate "payroll" loot buried out in the swamps -- I would be looking into it very seriously -- and I'm dead serious about that. --times a wasting --hop to it.

I was given the approx location by the out of town eye witness (mechanics father) to the best of his recollections. I told his son that I would let him in on it if he wants to go with me. I need to ask him if the camp is still there and who owns the property. I wonder if anyone else has pieced these two events together. It must be the same payroll. How many Confederate payrolls could there be buried in the swamp? Its amazing when all the clues fall in place. They all fit. It is however a very large swamp and memory can be deceiving after so many years.

back to Gomez Point:

Okay here's the info collected from my meeting with elder members of the Seminole tribe this past weekend.
*A large quanity of gold and silver bars were recovered by a local restaurant owner in 1978 when he and a buddy just happened to see a shipwreck in shallow water as they were returning from a day of fishing.
The wreck was/is at or very near Gomez Point or Gomez island.
Now I don't know where that is but I'd guess near the shark river?
*2 wooden barrels cut in half, each filled 1/2 way up with bars. This was told to me by a first hand eyewitness account.
Where the heck is Gomez point?

Gomez Point is at the tip of Panther Key.

Aboard Gasparilla's pirate ship was a man named Juan Gomez. Gomez was born in the Republic of Mauritius (off the coast of Africa) in 1781. His Portuguese parents moved to France around 1814 and he often told stories of seeing Napoleon Bonaparte dressed for parade. Labeled as the last pirate in Florida, Juan Gomez, or Panther as he was known to Gasparilla, told tall tales of capturing ships, killing innocents and sending more than a hundred captives to walk the plank.

Panther Gomez died on a small sailing boat near the waters off Panther Key; the year was 1900, and when the last pirate died the end of an era passed with him.

Gomez was a blockade-runner during the civil war and fought with Zachary Taylor in the first Seminole war. He became a recluse during the autumn of his 119 years and lived on Panther key about 15 miles south of Marco.

Fishing, clamming and hunting sea turtles provided a living for the former pirate as he chose a lifestyle of seclusion away from the rigors of Key West and Fort Myers. His only companion was a wife of many years and as the stories have been recounted, she was devoted and loyal despite the history of a husband who served under the black flag.

On many occasions, curious visitors, census takers and even journalists traveled by boat to visit the last pirate and hear the tales from his days of plunder.

Near the end of his life, in 1900, two census takers came for a visit and heard a midnight tale of the old pirate's testimony... (click link)

I have not found it in my florida notes yet but I am 100 percent sure I have read about it before and them finding coins drilling in the glades. I will pm you with the book, link, etc soon

Thanks. My eyewitness to the well drilling was only 12 years old at the time, lives out of town now, and he believes the date of the event to be 1958. I need better directions from him. He told me an approx location and that he could never find it again. He is trying to help. I only have these clues and some clues to the location that I am holding back at this time. So far, I am a bit surprised that all the clues fit together.

Sounds like you have some collection. I also have several boxes of newspaper clippings from the 70's and 80's on treasure but in no particular order. I use the 1973 Geological Survey Maps. They are Orthophotomaps prepared from aerial photographs taken in 1971. They show the old trails and hunting camps. I also have hunted the area. I used to have a Full Tracked Vehicle that would go through some pretty nasty muck. . I will have to use an ATV on this search.

Problem was if the engine went underwater and entered the carb, I was in deep trouble. The Everglades water is generally from a few inches deep to a couple of feet, waist high. There are dry islands and there are scattered deeper holes, that hold water and gators during severe droughts. Part of the Glades is an old bombing range. I spent several nights stranded one time after sinking in a hole that my driver failed to see. The mosquitos were so bad, that first night, that my arms were solid black and we had no bug spray. No sense trying to brush them off. Four of us huddled on the top platform trying to get the attention of any passing plane. The sawgrass or cattails seemed about 10 feet tall and we had no compass. The only part that could be seen above the grass was a small orange flag on my CB antenna. Anyone attempting to make it to the road would be walking in circles all night. This was before cellphones and GPS. Lesson learned. Always be prepared to spend the night when entering the swamp.
They actually make homeade fulltracks that float. They have a sealed bottom and can cross a canal. They are called "floaters." Unfortunately, mine sank like a rock in that large gator hole that night I will never forget.

Otherwise, we had a lot of fun.

I was sent a PM by aTN member to inform me that a group was arrested trying to dig for this gold, by Florida Fish and Wildlife, between Alligator Alley and Route 41. He gave me no further information as yet. If anyone knows any more about this arrest please PM me. thanks.
I may go out there tommorrow or Wed., the weather is supposed to be cool.

No kidding?!! Have you heard anything else on this? Do you know the time of day that this occurred?

I was considering joining a treasure hunting guy back in Saint Petersburg who has been there before to a dry spot and recovered gold and silver. Some of the items found were little carved men made of Spanish silver. The only catch is that we have to be dropped in by helicopter at night, and picked up the same way. Obviously I have slight hesitations... heh!

Oh, and did you find anything good while you were out there??

if the "treasure" is on the seminole res its the indains stuff --- its their "land" by treaty --it and everything on it / in it ( so get with a full blood seminole if its on the res to "recover" it )--the govt can not "squawk" that way -- if its outside the res it belongs to the land owner of the property its on--
