Hi all! These finds are from the dump on my family's property that I post about here very regularly. When I cant get out to my CW sites, etc. for whatever reasons, I always have my dump! Most people would NOT consider an old dump on their land a blessing, but you all can understand exactly why I am so happy about it, lol! Anyway, I usually just scratch the surface. Have been for years now. I dig down about a foot or so and just move along the ground, sifting and searching, and filling in the hole as I scoot along the area I'm working. Today, I decided to dig down until I stopped hitting trash. I know most would suggest that right away for a dump, but I have all the time in the world and was just taking it slow. Either way, I got about 4 feet down before I hit a layer with no more trash... just a few feet above the level of the creek below. I found lots of hand forged iron parts and pieces, like I always do. Buckles, leather, chain and a HUGE horse shoe(pic is after cleaning). Also found the "Radio lightening arrestor" and the awesome wood look glass? doorknob. At one point I saw a white shine coming from the hole. I thought maybe glass etc and proceeded to remove it from the dirt. As I got it in my hand, I could instantly see it was Mother of pearl. REAL mother of pearl, not imitation. It was very moist in the ground and the item was leaving a chalky residue on my hands. I carefully rinsed the dirt off and set it in my workshop to dry slowly. I know that real MOP is not cheap. I also know it was alot more popular in history than it is now. You can see in the pics, this is 100% NATURAL SHELL. It looks to be from a decently small framed revolver or derringer type handgun. I highly doubt we could ID what gun this came off of, but maybe somebody has an idea? I have a Cobra big bore derringer in 9mm(wife thought it was "cute") and this grip looks like it would almost fit right in place(its a very generic derringer type handgun) on the gun. I also have a few small frame revolvers, and the grip is very similar as well. As you can see, there is one hole through the grip, and another partially through. I know this is done on most/all grips with a single hole to keep them from spinning etc. I'm not expecting any identification etc. This is OBVIOUSLY a genuine mother of pearl handgun grip. I just wanted to share my unique find and I'm surprised it held up under 3-4' of dirt so well for so long! I know personally from using MOP in jewelry I've made, it is a very delicate substance. I feel this is a pretty cool find, and I hope ya'll do too! Either way, it will look amazing in my big "random finds" display case! I've included a few pics of the dump/our "camp" and the PILES of stuff we have found over the years. Maybe something in one of the piles sticks out to somebody? Still trying to figure the earliest age of this dump, just guessing still at this point. I hope ya'll think this handgun grip and everything else is as cool as I do! Too bad I didn't find more of the gun, but I'll sure be back looking! Stay safe everybody and happy hunting! 20200408_232852.jpg20200408_232917.jpg20200408_232925.jpg20200408_233002.jpg20200408_233002.jpg20200408_233009.jpg20200408_233044.jpg20200405_184920.jpg20200405_185031.jpg20200403_012201.jpg20200402_183747.jpg20200402_183800.jpg20200402_183812.jpg20200402_184015.jpg20200402_184158.jpg20200402_184256.jpg20200402_184256.jpg20200326_200330.jpg20200407_130641.jpg

Mother of Pearl grips were popular in the late 1800's through WW2. Your grip looks like it would fit a medium size Colt revolver. The shells these grips came from are from Australia and are now protected. That's why you never see new ones offered, only vintage ones like yours. I've owned several pairs. I don't know about yours since it's been in the ground but I used tin oxide to polish the ones I had. Gary

Cool stuff. When I moved into my current house a lot of the wiring was still the cloth wrapped wires going though porcelain fittings like the one you found. We never realized most of it was still hot even though the previous tenant had run new wires for half the house.

Nice bunch of finds, thank you for sharing! :occasion14:
