Surf Detecting with White's Pulse Diver

Hi,

The other day I finally tried going out into waist high water for a while with my PI Pro. I actually was surprised to find that generally, it isn't any harder than hunting on shore in the wave splash.

Only issue I was having was the MD was getting a lot of feedback when the depth of the water changed, when waves were coming in for instance. So I felt I had to keep going over the same areas over and over to be sure it wasn't a real signal.

I tried adjusting down the tuner and the gain a little but was not noticing much of a difference. I usually have them pretty close to the "P" markers on shore.

I was nervous about adjusting them too far and loosing too much depth because I don't know which one actually is the correct one to be messing with.

Was wondering if anyone has any recommendations that I can give a try to minimize the feedback while still getting good depth and target hits.

Thanks in advance for any advice, Jack

Hi Jack, i've been using this machine since May and it's even worse here in Hawaii (just moved from S. Florida). Yes, I want to wrap it around a tree, but I just go slower and listen, there is a difference when you hit a good target, than a wave going by. I refuse to turn it down at all. There really isn't anything else you can do. I swear the People at White's do not use there own machines, if they did they would find a way to fix this.

Yes using a PI in salt water can be difficult with the different salt content of the waves changing constantly. There isn't to much you can do with the settings except to turn it off. You have to listen for the loud signals mainly and this loses the deeper ones anyway. This is another reason I have about given up using my Pulse and switched to an Excal 1000. It is almost as deep and lots of good discrimination against iron and salt.

It would be easy for a manufactures to fix this but it would come at a cost of sensitivity and loss of depth which is why we buy a PI in the first place.

Hi Sandman,

I couldn't have said it better myself. I just went by KellyCo and played around with the Excal 1000 for a little while. I'm trying to figure out how I can justify getting one (to my wife). I was also wondering how I can get a 12 or 14 inch coil on it. In the time I have spent in the surf, I don't see any reason not to have a larger coil to cover more ground. My only concern is that if it detects stuff 18 inches down, I won't be able to dig it up without drowning myself.

Do you think the 10 inch coil is sufficient? I actually was going to buy the Excal at first, but wound up deciding on the PI Pro instead. I still like the PI Pro, and will be using it when I dive.

I had the same problem with the Beach Hunter ID when waves passed and I learned to notice it was a wave that had just passed me and ignored the signal it created, it didn't take long....

Good luck and good hunting..

Jack,

I bought the excal 1000 w/o having to say boo the the wife. :o

Of course, next week is our our 25th. wedding anniversay so I guess I've got her broken in! ;D

Good luck with gettin the wife's buy-in. :o

IMO, the excal 1000 is top notch! ;)

Re: Surf Detecting with White's Pulse Diver

Jack, the wife thing can be solved with some extra care and telling her of the rings you are missing without the Excal. Course, save one back and as soon as you do use the Excal at the beach, tell her the ring was found with the new detector. It works most times. Another benefit is you will start getting better meals to keep up your strength for more detecting. :D

For some reason I liked the 800 coil while diving due to it's ease of moving it around underwater. I've heard many say the 800 finds smaller targets however I've found them tiny earring backs with the 1000.

Ah, my wife is not the big roadblock I make her out to be, she is always supportive of things I want to do. Although dropping a grand on a MD will more than likely get a interesting facial expression!!

I can relate to that! But buying metal detectors is a lot easier after selling a fully rigged bass boat and SUV to haul it. Bass fishing can be expensive if you do the tournament thing. Detecting is much more relaxing and fun.

Re: Surf Detecting with White's Pulse Diver

Jack,

I had a PI machine for a couple of months and after only digging iron and chasing false signals I bought an Excalibur. I bought both machines new and tried out both to decide which one was for me. The Excal won and the other was sold on ebay.

I am the same way, I use my wife as the excuse. But really I can't complain about her. She is very supportive of most of what I do.

Sometimes it is even nice to pick up a used detector on ebay and keep both. It is easier to justify to the wife that there is not much invested in the used one and that you were saving the extra that you would have spent on a new one to buy her something special. It works with my wife, at least sometimes......

Also it helps to give the wife the nice finds. That way when you want to get a new detector, she will smile and not make you feel too guilty.
