Sunray Probes

Good Evening all,

I would like some input on the Sunray probe. First, I have a new E-Trac that I'm thinking about putting a probe on. I have a 15 year old Tinytec that still works fine. Also, got the wife a Fisher F2 that came with the Fisher probe so I have used two now.

The question......is the E-Trac / Sunray probe worth the $$$$. Does it add that much to the weight or to the balance of the unit. My thought is.....one less thing to carry with me plus it utilizes the functionality of the detectors circuitry and display screen. Both the Tinytec and the Fisher have very limited range especially the Fisher, you just about have to be touching your target to get a response. Does the Sunray offer more distance. And then last, are there any modifications that have to be made to your upper shaft such as drilling holes?? I have seen some adds that appear to use a new upper shaft.

Thank you very much for your time.........

Hi,

There is a lot of information on here and other forums about the benefits. But yes I think it is worth the $$$. In fact I have one on my E-Trac. The weight is minimal IMO. The single biggest advantage to me is that it works "in-Line" with your detector. So if you dig a hole and there is iron in it along with say a silver coin, you will know the difference. Very nice! Of course you can always use the pinpoint function as well. As for depth, it depends but I would say 2"-4" depending on the ground and the way your machine is set up. When you order the probe it should come attached to an upper shaft, meaning that you just swap shafts. At least that's how mine was.

Hope this helps,

I put the DX-1 on my MXT, it's the same unit designed for whites machines. Depending on where I set the sens., I can get up to 4". I don't notice the extra weight. Being able to ID targets in the hole or plug is valuable and with it I can dig the target dead center every time, no guessing. I don't use the bolts for the probe holder, so I don't think you would need to worry about drilling holes. I think it's worth it.

I'd say definately "yes", get the Sunray. I have one on my F-75 that is a very light detector. The Sunray is mounted up near your hand and forearm, so it doesn't have the leverage that added weight near the coil would.

Consider these advantages:

You don't have to remove your headset to use it.

The display off your main detector still gives the full TDI/target info.

You'll never lose it or leave it home or in the car.

Does not require additional batteries (or consume the detector's batteries - it's just switching to a smaller coil).

In super trashy spots you can use it to ground balance the detector.

I used to have one on my old MXT. What I did to help with the extra little weight was finally mount the probe on the side of the detector box not the shaft. I really believe it help with the balance. I thought the greatest feature of the probe was that I could click the trigger 2-3 times and it would desensitize the probe so that only the very tip of the probe was hot. Sure helped with the pinpointing. Don't click the trigger too many times or it will desensitize so much you won't be able to pickup anything. If they made a unit for my X-70 I would buy one in a minute.
