Well Phil.... (Niterider_58) and I headed to St. Louis Sunday morning to meet up with some of the guys in the detecting club. We got there by 8:00 AM...and by 8:45 it was raining! :angry4: The group of 10 quickly dwindled down to 4 ;D...but we sat it out...off and on for almost 2 hours. It ended up being Phil and I...along with club members Kelly-Stl and smallchange.
We hunted the first park for about 2 hours and I found the 1854 Seated Dime. Yep...I know it's a beauty ;D ...hey at least it's a seated!...and it STILL counts. :tongue3: Trust me...if you hold it in the light just right...you can make out the 1854 date. It is my first seated this year and man is it worn paper thin. It was down about 8". I took a second pic of the seated by itself to post separate from the other dimes..but it looks worse than it does here...so I didn't show it cause it looks like a silver slug. :tard: ...actually as I'm posting this and viewing the pic...it looks like a smooth silver slug in this pic too ;D
About 20 minutes later I hit a nutty sounding signal...but it was deep on the gauge so I started diggin' . Got down about 8" and out popped a wheatie. I probed the hole again...and it sang out SILVER. Popped out the 1892 Barber dime :hello2:
After the rain finally stopped altogether I made 2 or 3 phone calls to try and get some others to hunt with us...but couldn't get ahold of anyone....so the four of us decided to venture to another park. We took the not so scenic route through town ;D ...and promptly stopped at the store so I could buy some DRY socks.
After hitting every stoplight imaginable...we finally arrived. By now the rain had completely gone away...but had also killed 50% of our hunt time :angry1:
About 20 minutes in...I dug the Roosey..and then it hit me...all I need now is a Merc. for the grand slam. Problem was that IF we did hit a target to dig...we needed a jackhammer to dig the plug. ??? The clay ground was nasty hard! Well after another 30 minutes or so Igot an iffy hit...but it interested me enough to spend 15 minutes or so chiseling away until...out popped a 1942 Merc. Yippee!...my first grand slam in over 20 years. :D :icon_thumleft:
At this point...my arms and hands ached from digging in this stuff...so we moved to a different part of the park. I dug a memorial cent down 7"...then a nice green 1919 wheatie down only 3"??
About 15 minutes later I got another shallow clad dime type of hit..so I dug about a 3" plug...then dug some dirt out of the hole...then ran the probe in the hole...nothing. Ran the probe over the 3" plug...and it sang clad dime. Sure enough...sitting there in the 3" plug was a nasty.grayish/brown coin I thought for sure was a wheatie. When I snatched it up however...I saw the "one dime" on the back. Upon closer inspection...sure enough...a second Barber dime...1899...from 3" down.??? :o I'm not complaining...but What the heck...a 1919 wheatie...and now an 1899 barber dime...BOTH from less than 3" down?? :blob1: I'm still puzzled by this as I type...not complaining...just puzzled.
Thanks for sharing my GRAND SLAM with me. I suppose with the seated being so worn... it might be kind of an "inside the park homerun" ;D ::) ...but it IS a GRAND SLAM nonetheless....and it's all mine. Good luck to everyone on your next hunt.

Congratulations Bryce, what a day. Sounds like you guys have some decent parks there (except the rock hard soil). Who would have ever thought they could get one of each all in one day! We would love to see some "in Action" photos too. The seated reminds of the stuff I have been finding in the surf. It's silver but out of the water they are very worn from the sand, that and the dark color from the salt water. They are not much to look at, but they are my treasures :icon_pirat: You gotta keep this good luck streak that you are on going strong . . .

very cool group. I got about 4 seateds just like yours one is a No date S, very frustrating

Hey SF. Great job man. That seated still counts man. I can see lady liberty. I'm getting pretty good at seeing detail on worn coins seeing how many of my coppas are that way. You are good at sniffing out the silver :icon_sunny:

Wow, Bryce, it's just one great post after another for you. You are definitely on a roll, my friend! Seems like lately you've been breaking your own long standing records with ease. Congrats on the 4-Banger. That's one really worn seated. :o I wonder if it got that way from being in circulation for many years. :icon_scratch:

Keep up the great hunts!

Way to go Super finds. I can tell it is a sitting liberty. Its just a little faint. Good luck hunting in the future. I am going to hunt an 1850's house on Tuesday. I will post my finds later.
Dman
Thanks Dman. I hope you pop dome goodies out.

Congrats. I was just wondering after reading your posts for the last couple months, have you kept all of your finds over the years? If so, you must have a bucket of silver by now.

What no capped Dime? :wink:That is just incredable!!Lucky for everybody else your way, that you don't get out more cause there would be no silver left!!!

You sent that ball a-flyin!!!!!

Congrats on all of the old coins!!!!

Wow! Yeah, the Seated has some miles on her (but is infinitely better than the None I've ever found), but this is the first 'hit for the cycle' I've seen here.

Outstanding!
