What a day! One hundred and fifty six coins today! Got an early start at the soccer complex this morning when the grass was still wet with dew and the sun was just a red rubber ball on the morning horizon. It was a bit cool out but very quiet save for a neighborhood dog yapping about a block away. I started off near the parking lot next to the concession stand/restroom building.. finding pennies and dimes right off the bat. And pull tabs.. always with the pull tabs! Oh well, I dig'em, I keep'em.
I found a few quarters and a few nickles as well, LOTS AND LOTS Of pennies. No old coins today though. A lot of dissolving pennies though.. I've not tried to cash in any of these "cancer pennies" yet so I wonder if the bank will still take them. It's amazing, you can almost tell the date of the pennies when up pluck them out of the ground.. if they're not dissolving they're either brand new (on the surface) or they're pre '80s 1980's that is.
Too bad can slaw and pull tabs don't dissolve like that, why in a few years we could see an end to them.. slaw and pull tabs that is.. But NOOOOOO.. they're indestructible!
I found a blast from the past while digging up all those cancerous pennies.. a Suicide Key! I'm sure some of you "old timers" are familiar with them.. they used to come attached to cans.. like Spam, sardines, potted meat, deviled ham etc etc. you pulled the little slotted key from the tin and inserted a small tab on the can into the slot and turned the key to open the can. Too many times people would get in a hurry or not pay attention and end up cutting themselves on the razor sharp metal ribbon that the key was winding up. OUCH!.. hence the name.. Suicide Key!. I for one am not sorry to see them gone .. <smile>

I found pens, pencils, pins and wires. Man I HATE those wire bread ties!.. once they've been in the grass a while they look like the grass.. but the metal detector cries out "PENNY! PENNY! PENNY!" .. the Bullseye says "IT'S THERE! IT'S THERE!" but all you see is an empty hole and grass. <rolling eyes> ARRRRGH! <laughing>
I found another bit of wire too.. silver wire. I'm thinking it was formerly an earring with some little bangle or something on it. <shrug>
In the middle of one of the soccer pitches I found a big ol' token.. thought it was a fifty cent piece at first.. till I brushed the dirt off a bit. It's a commemorative coin/token for a soccer "classic" .. imagine that.. on a soccer field? Go Figure! <laughing> Along with that token I found yet another coin/token.. a little smaller but oh thank goodness.. a MIRACLE at last! I've been saved, at least figuratively speaking. Saved me from the suicide key perhaps. <shrug> In the parking lot (edge) in the grass I found another soccer bling.. a pin from another soccer classic (playoff or something) here are all three ..

Batteries (one this trip) bolt anchors (half of one) electrical outlet covers, buttons, an old style metal cleat (screw in type), a small fuse, some washers and a nut, and some hair flare.. (clasps).. one rabbit and one berries or flowers or something <shrug>.. oh yeah.. and two dog tags..(one a rabies tag and one a ornamental "human" type) and a nail in some sort of manufacturer's name tag, I'm guessing on some sort of shed or siding or something. looked like a quarter target on my detector.

Oh did I mention coins?.. 156 !!!! I got tired of digging so many pennies and pull tabs after about two hours.. I can't imagine how many I would have had if I'd kept digging everything I targeted! Oh well.. just another trip to the soccer complex to get stuff I missed this trip. <Smile> $10.08 in clad for the day, not bad at all! I'll take them numbers anytime.

Get out there and hunt! Happy Hunting all!

Hey Bluegrass man....WTG on digging like a badger (oh, I mean Wildcat :)). Anyway, I noticed the same thing about pennies and looked it up last week. Found that starting sometime in 1982, they started minting pennies using mostly zinc (less than 1% copper)and that's why they deteriorate so quickly. Prior to that, they were made of 95% copper and really hold up well. In fact, I now separate the pre-1983 pennies from the others since they contain 2 cents worth of copper. I also noticed my DFX will give me a stronger tone and a higher VDI number when its a copper coin, so I know pretty much what I'm digging for after I pinpoint the location. I've actually stopped MDing this week...it's so dry and the ground is so hard, I've decided to wait for some rain. Later.

Everyone keeps saying that I should be sore or worn out or totally exhausted from all that digging. Funny, I never seem to be that tired after a good day of detecting like that last one. I guess it's all the excitement or just being jazzed up. But also, it's not like it was a twelve hour stint or anything, at most I've only been out detecting for maybe three hours at the longest stretch so far. Usually my hunts are between a half hour and maybe two hours. Usually only average to be about an hour and a half. <shrug> That last hunt in the soccer complex was in the morning too, which makes it easier, I get out before the heat of the day and by the time it's getting hot, I'm usually ready for lunch anyway. <smile> And if per chance I get to do any detecting in the evening, it's usually not long before dark so that kind of limits my digging as well.
Speaking of "digging" I hate to burst everyone's bubble, but that kind of coin fishing I did at the soccer complex just doesn't require a lot of digging, most of the finds are just in the roots of the grass or just under them.. a lot of the time the coins are on top of the soil nestled amongst the roots of the grass and weeds.. <grin>
Of course you can't get away with NO digging if you want to find the good targets, but out of over two hundred targets that day I'm sure I only really dug maybe thirty plugs.. <shrug> the rest were just a turn of the knife in the roots and up pops the coin, or token, or pull tab.. or bottle cap.. or.. well you get the idea. <smile>

Oh.. and I have to.. AGAIN.. give credit to my Bullseye II pin pointer. I know for a fact that when I find a penny near or on the surface, I can sweep my Bullseye around a bit and usually find another or even more pennies close by.. be they from a pocket spill or someone's car door spilling coins.. or whatever the reason. Pennies (for me) usually come in multiples. I've found as many as twenty seven pennies in a two foot square area before. Yeah, until I learned to sweep with my bullseye after retrieving the first target, I got up and then down and up and down many times.. <grin> kind of like at mass.. <giggle>
Wish quarters would come in groups like that.. <smile> the most I've ever found like that was six quarters.. and four dimes, and one nickle, and seven pennies. I was happy to retrieve each and every coin though!
I'll keep hunting and trying to live up to everyone's expectations of my exertions with this hobby.. but aside from an occasional Chicken Dance, I don't think I'll be going out of my way to exercise any more than I have to to retrieve any targets I "dig". <laughing> Maybe I could do the Chicken Dance after EVERY coin??? Nahh.. that would demean the dance. <grin>

LMAO! You are a riot, bud!

Excellent morning outing. I too like to get out just as the sun is peeking over the horizon. The air is usually cool even in summer time and everything smells fresh and new....unless you are hunting down wind from the stockyards! In the early morning you can really feel fall in the air and it won't be long before some are griping about the ground being frozen. Luckily I can hunt year around here as we have some fairly warm days even in the dead of winter. It's always pleasant to throw on a sweater and get out and dig on those 45 to 60 degree days. Oh well, I stray off subject. Glad you had a good day! M :) nty

Here's my own version of the "Chicken Dance" (only when I find a silver coin, however) :D
