This is my 3rd order of large dollars coins in the past 2 years or so. I know the folks down at the cash department. I called them up (as I have in the past) and asked how many of the Eisenhowers they had. This time it was 367 of them. And no, they can't order any more in. So I said I'll take them off their hands. I scheduled a delivery for my bank. Then the day before they were coming in I get a phone call from them. I was thinking it'd be like 'sorry, we have to charge a bag fee' or 'we forgot, they were slated for delivery elsewhere' or something like that. Not the case! They said they just got 202 more in that had been shipped to them via another bank. Did I want them too? Cool! So I got 569 Ikes in a bag today. I just looked through them and I'm pretty happy. I found (4) 1972 variety II's (the so-called 'King' of the Ikes), 1 each of the 1976 P and D Bold letter (variety I) and (2) 1973Ds.

I had not found a 1976D variety I or a 1973D before. So my collection is going in the right direction! No proofs or old silver but that's ok. I'll wait a few more months and call them back and see if they have some more by then.

Cash department of ... ?

The local armoured truck cash/coin delivery service (department). I'm not going to say their name as it's not really pertinent and I don't really like to divulge much information about my sources in a public forum.

Nice job. I've been pleading with my tellers to try and order me some. I'd say it was worth it for 73D's. How can you tell if a coin is the "king of Ikes?"

In 1972 they had 3 varieties of the reverse die, the main difference (and probably the only distinguishable difference) was the way the earth appeared. The variety II reverse is the rarest one, and they actually sell for a decent amount on Ebay. When I get home later tonight I can post a link to a great website that really helps you figure out each of the three varieties. They are pretty easy to tell once you see them all next to each other. I'll post a pic later tonight of the coins I saved too. One of the 73Ds is really nice, not really any wear on it with nice crisp reeding, the other is slightly circulated.

If you are talking about half dollar boxes, same here. I had a good box early on this year, and some 'back in the day' average boxes in the January-February range, but the last 3 months have been terrible. I switched to other denoms for the time being, as I enjoy finding all sorts of goodies, not just the silver (of course I like getting silver though!). Since the halves seemed to drop off, from what I've seen the nickels and dimes have picked up. Today was my first time ordering Ikes this year, and it was the best haul of them so far. I also have been doing quite a bit less crhing now that the weather is nicer and I can actually get out detecting a little more. But sometimes my other hobbies (I have two classic cars that are hobbies on wheels) take time out of md'ing and finding silver in coin rolls.

Ok, and some pictures:

Interesting, when I spoke to a friend who's in the same business (he's an account manager at Fargo), he said I couldn't purchase any coins because the coins belonged to the bank that they acquired them from (or the bank of the account they acquired them from). Perhaps though your route of ordering the coins THROUGH the bank would bypass that issue. You are saying they allowed you to order on behalf of the bank and have it delivered to your branch, correct?

That's correct. I have the coin delivered to my bank branch. When a bank sells excess money, (i.e. Ikes), that physical money (the actual coins) are no longer theirs. It is the property of the company that picks it up (at least in my case it is). So they can do whatever they want with it. And luckily, with Ikes, they want to get rid of them as soon as they can because it's like idle money. It's not working for them. It's not earning interest anywhere, you know? So they will gladly sell them and just add them to the normal weekly delivery to my bank branch. My branch has a contract anyway so they aren't making an extra trip.
