So I was at my best spot tonight, and I am using full tones. I was using a program someone on this forum posted, and I know Vino uses the same or very similar program. While giving me advice, he mentioned to not use any disc. I have had my disc at 4.0 because the noise was too much.

Tonight, in a very iron infested area I was getting a very slight good tone mixed in with the iron. I could not pinpoint it, and I was sure it was just nails. Then I decided to take the disc down to 0.0 and try. Wow, what a difference! There was no blur, I was able to lock onto the sweet tone from one angle, between the junk. And it was deep! It turned out to be an 1899 Barber dime, the 50th silver coin from my favourite spot.

I kept the disc at zero, and not long after another Barber dime revealed itself, same rusty nails in the hole. It's hard to get used to the constant chatter of the iron, but it almost just turns into white noise, like it's not even there. It was weird. I'm starting to believe that hearing every signal in the ground is the only way to maximize results.

Thanks for the advice Vino!!

Full tone all the way in iron infested i m using it on the Thames river and it is a enjoyable melody:hello2:

I run a 3 tone program in heavy iron with no disc, do you think full tones would still have the advantage?

I haven't run a three tone program, but I'll bet that zero disc will surely give you the information you need to work in iron. Just gotta get used to the noise lol.

I also found that when I think I have a good target in a junky mess but can't find exactly where it is, I'll pop over to pinpoint mode and locate all the signals in the area. Then I'll go back to full tones and investigate every signal that I heard in pinpoint. Often you can locate a small soft signal this way.

An enjoyable melody...I'll try to remember that haha!

Lucky you getting to hunt the Thames!!!

Good for you bud. I will not mention your specific location out of respect for your site privacy. But some of the last open homesteading land in our province around the turn of the century was in the south, and there were a lot of U.S. based homesteaders coming up. And your spot was a recognized funnel/crossing point. Do you think that this is a partial reason for some of your older finds (beside being good with your machines). They crossed the line and rested after a very long wagon journey ? And the prevalence of the older U.S. coins ? Just tossing it out there. You make wonderful finds in a relatively concentrated area, so it got my mellon a thinkin'. I am also a bit of a history wonk and some of this stuff interests me. I'm way too cheap to burn gas to check southern rodeo grounds etc. south of here myself. Besides, I know that they have been spanked six ways to Sunday for decades.

Thanks NWMP. My area was definitely a bottleneck for people going from one country to the other back when the prairies were being settled.

I find an even mix of old US and Canadian coins, especially the closer I get to the border. It sure makes things fun!

As for my spot, I have very special circumstances, and permission from three different authorities to be there. This is the reason why most places have been detected, but this one has not.

Yes! With full tones it lets everything in. You know what everything down is.
Like J said he could not get a clear signal until he took all the disc off.
With 3tones you dont get a clear picture of whats under the coil in heavy iron.
3 tones will work great in clean ground.

Great finds J!!!
The machine is really talking to you now..lol
If the iron is soooo bad I turn the disc up to 2.0. I dont go any higher than that. It seems to be just enough to settle it down.

Nice post J. Cache, and very nice finds.
Sounds like you are really getting the hang of it.
I appreciate that you are sharing information about your own personal experiences.
It gives me insight, and a little hope.
I picked up a IHP and a cool old spoon Sunday running full tones and DEUS Fast in a really trashy area.
Gona have to try lowering the discrimination, and see what happens.

I have a 1759 tavern permission that I have been hunting all summer. The EMI is so bad there, that running full-tones/0-disc is tough. The EMI makes it hard to distinguish anything, and the only way I can even get any diggable signals is to run basic-1. Even then, the EMI chatter is nearly-unbearable. Next time I go there, my plan is to use my ATP, so PLEASE forgive me for that. I got to try.

Any advice on this would really be appreciated. I love my Deus, and I'd love to use it at this site. The owner told me that he's lived there since 1967 and its never been detected, so there is bound to be something good there - I just cant get through the chatter to find it.

Otherwise, its full tones all the way for me!

I hunt alot of places like that.
The only thing you can do is use the 9in coil, and drop the sens down to 85 and find what freq is is best, most of the time its 18k.
You can try off setting the freq also. Good luck.

Hey J.Cache, first of all congrats and second of all thanks. Thanks to Vino too. Thanks because I detected Saturday and decided to try "0" Discrimination . I now have about 15 hunts with the Deus under my belt. Loved the machine right from the get go. Been using Full Tones for the last 6 hunts and liked it better each time. With all my custom programs, I had the Discrim set anywhere between 4 and 8. After reading your post I decided to give "0" discrimination a try. It made all the difference for me. The iron sounded more like iron, the non ferrous targets hit cleaner, I was able better hear those iron masked targets as well. Everything just made more sense.
Setting the discrim to "0" was one of those "aha" moments when things just all seem to come together. :headbang:

I understand completely lol! Suddenly it hits you, and it starts to make sense. Good job, and glad you are sticking with the 0 discrim. It can be noisy, but it's worth it in the areas that count.

Congratulations on the Barber dime. I will be trying a full tone program this weekend myself after reading through these threads. Programmed it last night, but will change discrimination from 3 to 0. Looking forward to it, like a kid on Christmas. Thanks to all who have helped us newbies with the Deus settings.

I use full tones all the time now, it's great in amongst the iron.

You can use disk up to 2.0 without any loss of depth. Higher than that in version 3.2 some filtering is becoming active, which seems to cost.
Best greetings from Germany
Olaf
