Stupid things done while metal detecting

I am not sure about the rest of you but I pretty regularly do something that I kick myself for while metal detecting. There is something to be said for being experienced in the hobby. Here are some of the stupid things I have done feel free to laugh at me :D ;D :D

1. Went metal detecting with steel toe boots. The funny part is it took me a ? an hour to figure out why my targets kept disappearing.

2. Dug a hole that was at least 10 inches deep looking for a target only to find that it was less than an inch deep on the outside of my hole.

3. Dug at least a foot away from my original visual pinpoint.

Just a few of the things I have done that make me laugh. I am sure there will be many more to come.

i had found an old site with plenty of crap lying around so i turned the discriminator up a fair bit so it would only accept silver and copper coins, did real good found plenty of silver and copper coins some in the early 1800's, then when i thought that i had got all the cream i decided to show a few buddies the spot.
Well wouldn't you know it, a spot which i had done to death one of the guys finds a gold Sovereign,i couldn't believe that i had missed it as it was only a few inches down and it would have blown my headphones of.
i got him to put the coin on the ground and ran my detector over it,not a bloody sound. The problem was that i had turned my discriminator up to high. :-[ Believe me that was a hard learned lesson. ::)

I drove over 100 miles to an old park. I had not had my detector very long, got tired of burning through alkaline AA batteries, so this time I had just put rechargeable AA nicad batteries in the detector. I did not realize they were old and weak, would not hold a charge, and crapped out within 15 minutes. I thought, no problem, I have a spare set. They were more of the same batch of old nicads that were old and would not hold a charge; they also worked for only 15 minutes or so. >:( >:( >:(

There I sat, brokenhearted, 2 sets of dead batteries, & I'd only started... :-[ :-[ :-[

Meanwhile, 2 other guys I had met up with at this site were digging up silver and wheats galore... :-\ :-\ :-\

I now use rechargeable NiMH cells, and carry a set of alkaline AA's for backup. I had a long time to think about this as I drove home,
seriously considering if there were some place along the way I could rent some time on an automatic butt-kicking machine...
