does not seem fossil-like to me, because it is raised UP in areas (or appears to be). but, i am not an archeologist or paleontologist or geologist. I am a sociologist. :icon_scratch:

if not a fossil, possibly a shell print/press on pottery.

It does look like a fragment of a marine fossil. What you might want to do is also post a thread in this section of TNet:

Fossils

And if you do, with a subject line like "Canadian fossil?", so fossil collectors from Canada will take a look. They may be best equipped to help you. It does look more like a fossil then a carving.

Could be a part of a religious item or statue?

What is the material? If not a Fossil then possibly something off of some tile or something ornate from an old house.

have another look

It is carved out of a fairly hard pipestone. It looks like it was worked on while part of a larger stone. If y look closely you can see where the outer edge is shaved down. Just wondered if anyone has seen anything like it? I sure would like to find the other piece of it.

Whatever it is, it's a fragment and not complete. Ammonites came in all sizes, from tiny to very large. And ammonites are common fossils in the Canadian prairie. I had something like an ammonite in mind when I said it looked more like a fossil. One might picture it as a tiny fragment of something like this for instance, which are various ammonites. So I thought it might simply be a small fragment of one of these. They start off tiny when born, after all, and maybe it's just the fragment of a baby ammonite.

I appreciate everyone's opinion. I would say if you all held this in your hand you would realize in half a second it's not a fossil. I might be new to this forum but not to artifact hunting. Anyways I was simply wondering I anyone has ever run into a similar type of stone carving.

Jesuits used a sun like symbol for Christ ...the indains may have used it after being exposed to the Jesuits

Well, whatever it is, for sure far better photos then you have posted might really help. These photos are not very good at all. Maybe take in sunlight, and real good, sharp closeups, and from every angle. It's tough judging anything potentially out of the ordinary without much better photos. But, if you post photos good enough to demonstrate conclusively that it is a carving, that would help.

Are you extremely familiar with fossils from your neck of the woods? One reason I ask is, even with the photos posted, it does, at max magnification, look like a fragment of rock. Is it rock??

Yes it is rock we have a lot of natural pipestone in this area and it would appear to be a dense version of pipestone. Some pipestone around here is so soft you can scratch it with your fingernail. This however is quite a hard stone

Looks like it could be part of Crinoid fossil as well. Need more photos.

My vote is a fossil. The 1st pics did not look like a fossil to me, but the 2nd set of pics gave me the angle I needed to see it was a fossil.

Ok this is the only artifact that I could find that resembles yours. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1475924209.036880.jpg
