Strange quarter & penny question...w/better pic

Hi, guys!

Has anyone seen a penny like this?? It is a 1993 and came in a roll of pennies when I had my store.? The quarter I bought from a Wallyworld cashier today.? 1999D Connecticut.? Did it come out of a set maybe?? Never saw one like it.? Are they gold, or just coated? with what looks to be gold like those dollar coins?

Thanks for the info!? Happy hunting!?

Here is a better comparison picture.?

Re: Strange quarter & penny question...

They are selling the Quarters on TV & in some Magazines.

I even saw an ad for a Free one, however once you order, they try to sell you a case for it in,
plus they try to sign you up for the complete set, as their released

Before they send it out.

That quarter is definitely unusual, I don't see anything strange about the penny but it may just be the quality of the pics. HH omnicognic 8)

Re: Strange quarter & penny question...

the 1 in 1999 is doubled, however that could be the Pic or the Electroplating.

It's been a LONG time since I saw a Penny that Color, & never a Clad.

That I'd have Checked.

Omni, it's either my bifocals or the el cheapo beer. Either way, seeing double comes in handy at a nude beach at least 1/2 the time anyway. As for the pics, I can't really tell for sure.

Re: Strange quarter & penny question...

There's nothing double on the coins (that's just my picture taking...still practicing). It's the colors...gold quarter (are they electroplated?) and no copper, steel penny, just like the 1943. I've had the penny now for a couple of years. Just not normal coins....Is there a way of removing copper maybe?

I thought it was a "Red Cent"

Yes there is a way to remove the coating. I don't know what it is :D but there is a way.
Maby Intense heat.

I guess it also could have come from the mint like that, If one of their Sheets
wasn't up to standards also.

Wouldn't intense heat do damage to the steel, too? Or is copper just a thinner metal, therefore makes it easier to remove? There are no signs of copper in the lettering. Some would have to stay back in the small spots, don't ya' think?

Unless it was soaked in something to remove it, yes there should still be signs of copper.
or at least signs of heat damage.

in that case I'm leaning towards Defective Sheets at the mint.
? (Uneven copper coating) maby one corner of the sheet they stamped them out of was
? ?copper free.

BTW, guys, I know I've posted some bad pics...my eyes aren't the greatest either. I'm finding if I take the pics under the flouresent light with no flash, they come out better. The first two were taken w/natural sunlight. Course the flouresent is the only one on at 3:30 in the morning! LOL

Thanks for the info Jeff of Pa. You would think a 1993 would've stopped in someone else's hands in 10 years (but that is with any odd coin we find in circulation). Strange.

when i saw the penny first thing that came to mind was it had been heated (as already stated) as for the quarter they are selling gold plated connectitcut quarters on e-bay for 2 bucks.

if its some sorta flaw from the mint shes worth a fortune these rarely escape quality control, and are rare I would look into it further, tammahawk

I agree with the heat theory for the penny . I have often tossed a couple of them on a roaring wood stove in the middle of winter --- they would look very '' zinkish '' after many hours of intense heat .

Re: Strange quarter & penny question...w/better pic

Littleton Coin Company sells 24K Gold plated Statehood Quarters. Listed on pg. 20 on there Hard to find coins catalog. The Quarter could be from that set. 2004 Year Set (5 coins) $12.95 etc.....I'm sure other years sold for similar price. As far as the penny, I vote for the heat theory as "The complete Lincoln Cent Encyclopedia" doesn't mention any variety of that year or type. Hope this helps.
Either way the quarter is a cool find ?

Re: Strange quarter & penny question...w/better pic

There was one year during WWII where pennies were made of steel, and I think that was 1943.

Are you sure the penny says 1993? Could it be 1943? Perhaps someone got off the copper clad somehow.
