By chance was the Nickel in the "Dryer"..as in Clothes Dryer...
I have an older Clothes Dryer and pulled out quarters and dimes that come out looking just like that.

They get caught between the drum and the worn-out drum seal. And spin around in place causing the wear..they get a nice deep copper color from it..

Just a thought

I am not sure, I got it as change from a store. It was like that when it came to me.

You can kick it txkickergirl. I quit when I realized I was doing permanent damage to myself, and never re-lapsed. Its not worth it. Quality of life is more important. I ate a lot of hard candy and still seem to always have a toothpick in my mouth. Dont use the patches. I dont see how putting more nicotene in your system could possibly help? I dont miss smoking; not at all; not one bit.

Ok! Thanks for telling about how you examined it. After studying the pics more closely, I can see that it is possible to do it, but to be so perfect it would have probably been done on a machine of some kind.

What is the date? Can you tell? Looking at the surfaces, and comparing it to another nickel, the detail is really lacking. It looks like the real deal but it is fuzzy. Could be a legit error of some kind!

I can appreciate the coin ring suggestions but if you look real close...that's some serious precise work for bein "banged on". I tend to think it is a mint strike error.Compare it to the size of a penny.
If it is indeed the beginings of a coin ring. My hat is off to how ever did that. If he/she is not a craftsman, smith or jeweler, by trade then i would say they are in the wrong profession. MHO, Jim

Here are my 2 cents, or should I say 5 cents....

More common on the larger coins such as Susan B. Anthony Dollars, as coins were continualy inserted into slot machines over and over again ( you would cash out at the widow when you won a cup of money from a slot mahine. the coins would be exchanged again to be put back into the slot mahines, again and again.)
I think that these are more common on the west coast "VEGAS"
I read an article in the Numismatist about this.

It could be an error coin, looks like the pressure setting on the striking die was to high.Just a guess?

I dont think that it is a mint error. This coin is altered outside of the mint.
Other meathods of hammering a coin is to place a piece of leather between the hammer and coin. Smooth every time. I will post a pic of what I believe is a hammered Lincoln Cent.
More later, I have to run for now.....

Another pic of the Barber Dime cut coin ring....

I am two hours into a hammered 50 cent. I am making a size 11 ring for myself. I will post pics of the finished product...hopefully next week.

My dad used to make jewelry as a hobby and he has a ring stretcher that also had an attachment to shrink rings. It only worked on round bands though. He would put it in a round hole and pull a lever and it would compress the ring thus making it smaller. I wonder if someone has used one of those on that nickel? Might be a crazy idea but it seems like it could work after watching. They could have given up after realizing it was going to make it too small for them to wear. Just a thought???

This cent is similar to the nickle. A bit smaller than a normal cent but the same weight.
This coin looks like after the rim was upset it was hammered flat with something like a piece of leather to soften the blow.

Okay, I found this post and thought how cool would it be to make the wife a coin ring.
I am in! Lil
Looked at all the stuff on how to make one.
Saw a few pictures above on how not to make one... Lil
The spoon will take some time.
I like the double sided one better. I think I have a better shot at making that kind.
Going to work on a old quarter I have.
Wish me luck.
