thats a nickle someone was tryin to make a ring out of. They would tap it with the back of a spoon till it battered out then drill the center out. It looks like they gave up....

I agree that it looks just like that... the beginnings of a ring.

just curious I have heard of this before, but how long does it take to make one of these rings, and exactly how do you do it? Do you just hit it with the back of the spoon millions of times???

Good question. Anyone know the answer?

I made my 25 cent ring in about 4 hours. I started with the spoon but switched to a jewellers hammers. Very lights taps while constantly turning the coin so that it remains even. With a spoon I bet it would take twice as long.

I am going to have to try that.
I quit smoking today and need something to take the frustration out on.

I'm going to make one with a silver half this week...something that I can wear. The 25 cent would be too small for me...the wife wears it.

Yup - YOU know the answer... as a charter member you have the search option here in T-Net mastereagle! Use your superpowers to read old threads about making the "coin ring"s...

You can also Google it, there are great sites with pictures (well - a few anyway) and instructions.

ok...after beating the quarter with a spoon for about 2 min. I switched to a hammer and after about 5 min. something clicked that I probably should be hitting the coin edge and not hitting the coin while it is lying flat...............YOU CAN STOP LAUGHING AT ME NOW! This one is just for practice and I am using clad, the next one will be done out of silver.

I always forget about the search function here, so I will go hunt up the threads and read them.

And yes beating the coin with the hammer does make me feel better and it gives me something to do when I get jumpy and want a smoke. I may end up making several of these rings.

Drop the clad and go straight to silver...clad is way too hard...you will get discouraged. Remember...very light taps while constantly rotating the coin. My system is four taps, rotate...four taps rotate...you shoud start seeing results after 20 minutes...four or five hours later and you will have a ring. Then you will need to drill out the centre and use a chainsaw file to finish it off...wear it with pride!

I have to tell you that the clad quarter is in pretty sad shape but I feel so much better. I am going to make one out of silver and I will take my time and use a spoon, when I am done I will post pics of both the clad and the silver.

I have actually pulled these type of coins out of the clothe dryer drum from industrial dryers. They sat inside the drum and just rolled the edges over. Just a thought. Have seen lots of them come out of the insides of the dryers. Just my 2 cents worth

I hate to be the lone eagle here eagle, but after looking at a nickel, I cant see that there is enough "meat" around the edge to produce that big of a rounded edge. You can still see the cornerstone at the base of Monticello, which is very close to the edge. I'm going with the idea that it is a ring that is formed around the edge of the coin.
I have made a coin ring before and as the edge is mushrooming, the coin surface is being radiused. The coin in the pic is not showing the radius that should be occurring.

I could be totally wrong here, so I am going to start a ring out of my nickel to see what happens.

Question: Does the coin look like it is one solid piece?

Good luck!...............HH

Yes it does, I have looked at it under a microscope and I cannot find any place where it isn't connected. The thing that gets me is that the "ring" around the nickel is perfect. It is the same shape and size wherever you examine it. It looks like it came out of the machine like this. But I am not certain that is why I asked for help her on the forum.

By chance was the Nickel in the "Dryer"..as in Clothes Dryer...
I have an older Clothes Dryer and pulled out quarters and dimes that come out looking just like that.

They get caught between the drum and the worn-out drum seal. And spin around in place causing the wear..they get a nice deep copper color from it..

Just a thought
