I found these two small nuggets on a North shore beach of Long Island. Need help identifying them. I did a few at home tests, they are not magnetic and seem to melt ice the same as silver but seem a little too dark in color and too light to be silver. I have not cleaned them this is the exact condition they were in when I pulled them out of the ground. Thanks!

Welcome NKobi!

I expect aluminum would melt ice much quicker than silver. Aluminum absorbs the temperature of
it's surroundings very quickly. I have an aluminum griddle made by Guardian. It's about 18" in
diameter and we use it for thawing frozen meats. It'll thaw out things in about a third of the time.

Best wishes!

I agree that they are probably aluminum. Do they seem light like aluminum? Just throwing this out there....... melted pewter?

Maybe a jeweler, pawn shop or scrap yard could do an XRF on it to determine metal composition?

I'll definitely take it to a jeweler to have it tested but it is likely aluminum it has the weight!

Save the jeweler's time. If you have a finely graduated container like a beaker or a graduated cylinder.
Fill it to one of the marks about half the way up the scale. Drop the nuggets in and measure the increased
volume on the scale. Weigh the nuggets and divide the weight by the volume. you can find utilities
to do this on line but pay attention to the units of measurement, sticking with metric is much easier. The
number you get is the specific gravity. Compare that to specgrav tables on line and you'll have your
answer. Or, go to your local scrap yard and ask one of the men there.
