This has been in my posession, in an old cigar box since the 50's when I was a kid. It is a 1945 metal penny. I think I remember getting it in change and saving it.
It sticks to a magnet! Were there any steel errors minted in 1945? I couldn't find any info on the web. There is absolutly no copper showing through anyware on this penny.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Thanks,
Antnee

As far as the whole penny/cent thing goes.... pennies are English, Cents are American. I make it a point to refer to them as cents myself, but if the thread is going along the lines of pennies- no big deal. I still know what they're refering to.

You would not believe how much contoversy this terminology thing causes though! About like God or Dowsing in some threads, with it getting quite vicious sometimes. ;)

??? ??? Antny: Looked & Looked, Nothing on 1945 Steels! Since you said it's Magnetic, that's good, but you're not out of the woods yet!

Possibility of Counterfeit or Altered Date exists! Check the weight! A Copper Cent weighs 3.11g. A Steel Cent weighs 2.70g. (allow some for wear!)

I would send it to PCGS or NGC for Confirmation.

Hope it's a Biggie!!!

Come on guys, lighten up a bit. This debate over penny, pennie or whatever just doesn't make cents! ;) (Lots of groans can be heard over the net even). Monty

Every time it rains, it rains...CENTS from heaven.

Don't you know each cloud contains...CENTS from heaven.

So when you hear it thunder, don't hide under a tree.

There'll be CENTS from heaven for you and me.

(music fades out...)

Nah, this cent/penny uproar is all silly. But the non-silly thing is to send your coin to NGC or PCGS or one of those. Do NOT take it to the dealer two doors down. Who knows what they'll tell you or won't tell you. Take it to a corporation that has dealt with millions of coins rather than just hundreds or thousands. Take it to a company who has authenticated coins worth tens of thousands of dollars. This could have been a one-of-a-kind accident and priceless. It could also be a fake. I have never heard of a 1945 steelie, but I have heard of mint bag tags and other things being accidentally struck (and I have heard of a 1944 steel CENT). It is obvious though that this is not a bag tag. It was definitely struck on a planchet. Check the weight--as others have mentioned above--on an electronic chemist's scale or medicinal scale. All you need is a normal 1945 and a steel 1943 for comparison. Then if it weighs the same as a steelie you should have it authenticated. Let us know what you find out!

Thanks guys,
I printed out the weights and a few posts and will try to track down a chemist's scale or medicinal scale. Maybe at the local drug store. I have a steel penny/cent :D for comparison.
I will report back.

If you can't locate a decent set, try grain scales at the local gunshop. Should be about 20 bucks, and quite accurate. Good for coins and gold both, if you're into panning.
