I bought this rock at a flea market near Murphy, NC. The seller claimed they found it about 12 miles away from the flea market near some quarry. I was wondering what it is. Magnets won't stick to it. It weighs 6 lbs. 4.5 oz.

[Things I think it might be.]

Black Jasper banded with some basic stone
Obsidian
Dense Tektite
Non-magnetic metal
Non-magnetic meteorite

Do they have Chert where you bought it? I know here where I live Chert comes in all different colors. I live in N Ga not far from you if its a straight shot. Nice color on it.

Could it be obsidian with chert bands?

Chalcedony can to a certain extent be glassy. To many alternatives to do anything but guessing.

Do you have rock clubs locally? A university with a geology department?
Either way, it would probably be better to take it to someone who can take a look at it in person.

Sometimes and I am not saying it is what yours is.......but slag can come in all different colors. Slag glass in my area was made when the wars were looking for steel and cooper for their weapons. I have found all different types made from the war here. They would dump the non metal forms in the rivers.
