In Your Backyard
okay today I was hunting where I usually go looking for 1800's relics...
This afternoon I turned up an old horshoe, and about to leave the forest I decided to scan this one last area and I got a strong signal from under a bush...

so I cleared away the leaves and some logs and branches, began to dig and I heard and felt something hard and hollow... I kept digging and cleared off the surface of the object. I then realized it wasnt metal... hard grey plastic, I then stuck my shovel underneath the object, proped it out of its hole and said to myself OH MY GOD!! WTF?!?!

It was a moulded plastic briefcase, I grabbed the handle pulled it out of the hole and seen an antenae sticking out of it and the word US GOVERNMENT engraved in the side, then said OMFG WTF?!?! what is this doing on Canadian land?!?!

Don't worry, I then burried it how I found it... still very odd to find something like that in a canadian forest. Anyone know what it could be for? it was quite heavy.

well if its a sysmic device my guess its for tracking vehicle traffic on the border a truck loaded with 2 tons of pot makes a lot of sysmic noise and out in the sticks no less....do the math....lots of canadians import that stuff here
without the proper taxation no less sheesh those canouks ....as far as dirty hands go i were gloves when i dig so when i snap a pic i take them off...sorry judy ::)

I'm glad I didn't take it home cause there's a handheld device that can track their distance and direction for recovery, and yea... I used gloves to dig it out. hehe

I dunno A truck with 2 tons of pot on it in the forrest. If no ones there. Does it make a sound?

You might go back and see if it's been disturbed since you last handled it.
If it has'nt been. Then I would doubt that it's being monitered. HH

truck with two tons of pot would make lots of giggling sounds and possibly doughnut chewing noises..........connections look like lot of corrosion present, possibly some forgotton 7.8 million dollar unit bought by taxpayers, used a week or so around the aftermath of 9-11 then abandoned after the bombing started.............gldhntr

I wonder if Canada and the U.S. had any joint maneuvers up there in recent years.
They would of if they had found that truck

rvbvetter, not a joint manuever but a bong manuever. They might waste too much if they were smokin joints. then again, it's the government, they don't care about waste.

BjC, are ya from BC??? If so, its definately for illicit cross border activity. That famous "BC Bud" was the subject of a Rolling Stone article a few months back. Keep 'em guessing, move it into a tree and put a bird's nest on it. No, wait, bury it at a Mc Donalds drive through lane in BC near one of the "shops".

Don't you think that by digging it up and it being a sysmic unit , "they" probably already know you are tampering with it? You probably lit up homeland security like a Christmas tree! Either report finding it or just leave it alone, either way they know about it already I'm sure. Monty

Check the Trees around the area.

there may have been Electronic Eyes on you.

Maby when the Box gets a Signal, Your on CANDID CAMERA ;)

IF you see one,
Jump up & Down while giving them
the OLD one finger salute ;D

I saw one of those back in 94~98, when I was in the Marine Corps. We were using them during one of our 48 hr wars, where one company would wage war against another with laser tag equipemt and flash bangs. They were using it to monitor for "enemy" vehicle movement coming from our least guarded flank.
If memory serves me, I don't think the battery lasts forever, and I think there must be some kind of computerized monitoring system in close proximity (10 miles I think). Forgive me if I seem a little vague on the details, but it was because it was not my job to worry about that stuff, and I've learned so much since then, I tend to forget all the old stuff.
I would bet pretty good money that some private left that there after a Canadian vs. American "war".

BJC, it could be there for border security, I saw a special on the discovery channel a while back and these private investigators were checking to see how close they could get to area 51 and they found lots of these on public land as you approached the restricted area. I would report it to the authorities and tell them it was that way when you found it......hopes this helps, and the batteries are probally dead by now. They were used for detecting vehicle and foot traffic by the way.

Ok, ok, ok.... It is exactly for border security. It is used in conjunction with the little spike thing to detect one or more of the following: Siesmic activity (footsteps), Vehicle traffic (to include direction), or IR beam breakage (crossing a line). Inside the case you will find nothing more that a couple batteries and some circuit cards. The range is infinite with the use of repeaters. They can be in the ground for years because the only time they use any power is when they are activated; think of the shelf live of a battery. They are kind of tricky to set up properly and having been dug up, it probably isn't functioning correctly now. It is of no use to anyone except the "owner" because you must have the receiver. Because it only transmits a signal when it's been activated, the "owner" might have assumed it was activated by something or someone and was waiting at the end of the trail to talk to them. When nobody showed up on the trail, they probably assumed it was an animal and didn't go to the location so as to not give away the placement of the unit. Now that it isn't properly set up anymore, it will no longer activate when it is supposed to and the owner will have no idea that their unit is compromised and not working correctly, leaving a large hole in the fence... so to speak.

My advice is: If you found it under the bridge near mile post 5 on state route 7 call your local US Border Patrol station, ask for a supervisor (a secretary isn't going to have a clue what you're talking about) and tell him that you accidentally dug up a grey box with an antenna at that location and was told that it might belong to them. If it was in the middle of the woods, GPS the location and call and give the coordinates and the same story about accidentally digging up a box with an antenna. Don't haul it out with you! Regardless of your intentions, if you are caught with it, removing it would be considered theft of US Government Property... a felony. Also keep in mind that it is designed to give a location while it is activated. Activated meaning: like bouncing down the road in the trunk of your car. Actions do speak louder than words and if you don't have a GPS, offer to take an agent and show him the box and allow him to recover it.

Don't try digging it up again. When you get really close to it, it will activate regardless of it not being set up properly anymore, keep in mind that these are designed to work long range. Eventually someone is going to go see what is activating it. You really wouldn't want to get caught digging it up... might be hard to explain.

As long as you are trying to do the right thing and aren't trying to remove the box, no one is going to get upset that you accidentally dug it up and everyone in the US will be able to sleep better at night! The agent will thank you, recover the box, take it in to be serviced with new seals and batteries, and plant it again tomorow in a new spot.

Now you know for sure what it is! Have a good day! Let us know what the Border Patrol says about it.
;D ;D ;D

By the way.... The US and Canada work real closely together to stop illegal border crossings and smuggling.... as opposed to the US and Mexico. The box being found in Canada isn't really a big deal. Remember, the US even has Customs agents that work IN Canada. Now... if we could just do something with Mexico! (like annex it and make it a US territory like Puerto Rico)

When i first read this i thought "Uh oh,.....Dubya's dropped the football!" :D......that is by far the coolest find i have seen yet!
